Fire in Longueuil highrise complex forces 200 into street
A fire that broke out in the electrical room linking two highrise apartment blocks forced 200 of the complex’s residents into the street early Wednesday.
The evacuation took place in an orderly fashion despite the cold. There were no injuries reported and residents were able to return to their homes before sunrise.
Longueuil’s fire department said the fire broke out at around 2:45 a.m. for reasons that had yet to be determined.
Smoke was detected on many of the floors of the complex, -
Montreal budget: Is the water-tax increase really necessary?
At city hall Tuesday, everyone agreed Montreal must spend massively to upgrade sewers and water mains to make up for years of neglect.
But other questions were up for debate. What does “massively” mean? Was an increase in the water tax really necessary? And where will those extra tax dollars actually go?
The scene: council chamber, where the Finance committee was studying an operating budget tabled last week by Mayor Valérie Plante that breaks a tax election promise, in large -
Canadiens prospect Zachary Fucale waits for opportunity with Laval Rocket
Zachary Fucale was the last player off the ice Wednesday at Place Bell. That’s the way the world works when you’re one of three goaltenders on a team and constantly draw the short straw.
After spending two hours at practice — including a stint on the bench, forlornly watching the Laval Rocket scrimmage — there were six bottles of water awaiting Fucale at his dressing room stall.
“I do that most days now, unless it’s a morning skate. At least I get my work in,& -
Westmount to allow free parking at meters for car-sharing services
Westmount will soon allow users of car-sharing services to leave their cars at metered parking spots on its territory — for free.
It will become the first demerged municipality on the island of Montreal to allow one-way car- sharing services, wherein users can pick up a car and leave it wherever they want, as opposed to having to pick it up and return it to a designated spot. It’s also the first territory on the island to give free access to parking meter spaces, a practice common in -

Montreal-funded outdoor event contravened city wood-burning bylaw
On Sunday night, with the wind chill hovering around -30 C, a constant stream of people arrived at Place des Festivals to enjoy Luminothérapie, an annual event that this year includes 30 interactive see-saws that light up and play music as they rise and fall.

Opinion: Overreaction to modest Montreal tax hike obscures broader issues
Montrealers recently concluded a year-long celebration of the city’s 375th anniversary. It was an opportunity to acknowledge the ingenuity, industry and determination that helped build and sustain the city we inhabit today.
With unemployment at a 30-year low, global companies investing in the city, and a booming real estate market, ambition and optimism are the order of the day.
All of which make the rhetoric surrounding a modest tax increase that much harder to reconcile.

BOSTON — When Canadiens coach Claude Julien walked into the TD Garden Wednesday morning, he didn’t make the mistake of walking into the wrong dressing room.

Opinion: Homelessness doesn't have to be a fact of life in Montreal
Every winter, the sight of people shivering in the cold and begging for change moves the issue homelessness to the forefront of our minds.
Homelessness seems like a sad fact of life in big cities like Montreal.
It feels like there is just no solution. I mean, if there were a solution to the problem of homelessness, our governments would surely be all over it, right?
In fact, the Canadian government and our provincial and municipal governments have been well aware that there is a solution to most -

From Formula E to flood breaks: Plante mulls recycling pricey concrete barriers
What do you do with $7.5 million worth of publicly funded concrete barriers bought for a road race that will no longer take place in Montreal?
