As Bitcoin upstages electric cars in energy usage, Hydro-Québec prepares
The global power needed to create cryptocurrencies this year could rival the entire electricity consumption of Argentina and be a growth driver for renewable energy producers from the U.S. to China.
Miners of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies could require up to 140 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2018, about 0.6 per cent of the global total, Morgan Stanley analysts led by Nicholas Ashworth wrote in a note Wednesday. That’s more than expected power demand from electric vehicles in 2025. -
It has been a bad week for Montreal-area commuter trains
Several unrelated incidents wreaked havoc with the commuter train lines on the first four days of the week.

The problems began on Monday morning when water from melting snow seeped into what Arsenault called propulsion boxes on four train cars serving the Deux-Montagnes line. As a result, several trains -

Lesley Chesterman: How do we react to abusive restaurateurs and chefs?
There are many reasons to boycott a restaurant. Disappointing food is the most obvious, but chances are you’re also not going back if waits between dishes were too long, the waiter was surly or you were seated next to the bathroom.
In the last year, however, another reason to boycott restaurants has come to the forefront: behind-the-scenes ethics — more specifically, allegations of abuse and sexual harassment. And there have been many.

CHUM urologist under fire for allegedly rejecting patient because he spoke English
A Montreal woman says her father was denied critical medical attention at Montreal’s new French-language superhospital because he had asked to be served in English.
Suzie Malysa says the treating doctor, a urologist, publicly mocked her father in French, called him an immigrant and a burden to society, and then tore up a resident doctor’s notes, threw them in the garbage and left the room.
Malysa said her father, Zbigniew Malysa, 67, was told Wednesday that he would have t -

Montreal wants power to decide where cannabis use can be banned
Montreal wants pot-smoking banned in public spaces where tobacco use is already forbidden — near playgrounds, for example.
And it also wants Quebec to give it the power to ban cannabis consumption temporarily in other places during special events, Mayor Valérie Plante told the Montreal Gazette on Thursday.
Under rules that came into effect in May 2016, smoking is prohibited in outdoor play areas aimed at children and on sports fields.
“We want to follow the same rules and byla -

N.D.G. is at the bottom of the snow-clearing heap, St-Léonard on top
On the snow-packed sidewalk of Montclair Ave. in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Ashley Baker stepped cautiously from driveway to front door with 8-month-old Max in a baby seat, navigating between snowbanks.
“After this past snowstorm, it’s been particularly awful,” she said. “They haven’t even plowed the streets yet. … There’s a ridge of snow up the middle of the street, so it looks like they just let the cars plow it.”

It's been a bad week for Montreal-area commuter trains

Montreal budget: Tenants, suburbs among hardest hit, critics say
They don’t get city of Montreal tax bills in their mailboxes but tenants and suburban residents will be among the hardest hit by tax hikes in Mayor Valérie Plante’s first budget, critics say.
The average municipal tax increase in 2018 will be 3.3 per cent, according to Montreal’s 2018 budget, made public Wednesday. But the pain varies according to the size of buildings.
While single-family homes will see increases of 2.8 per cent, apartment buildings with six or more uni -

Opinion: Suddenly, I was in computer withdrawal
Windows was about to open … but it didn’t.
Richard, the computer expert, came by — I have a desktop computer — but, after several hours, could not fix the damage. Finally, he unplugged the tower, picked it up, and left, hoping to repair it in his shop.
The next few days were spent in computer-withdrawal mode. Every so often, I would jump up to rush to the computer, as I usually do, only to realize that things were not as usual. While the screen, keypad, modem, with light -

Five things to do in Montreal this weekend: Jan. 12 to 14
As Montreal yo-yos from one weather system to the next, you’re probably on the lookout for a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities to fill your weekend. Luckily there’s a bit of everything happening this weekend.
Here are five ideas to make the most of it:

Arthur Kaptainis: Charles Dutoit exiled from CBC, but OSM gets a reprieve
The music was Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra, or The Thieving Magpie, as host Ben Heppner translated the title last Sunday on Backstage, his show on CBC Radio. He noted, naturally enough, that “Charles Dutoit led the Montreal Symphony.”
This was by no means the last broadcast of an OSM recording on a CBC program, but if a new CBC policy is applied rigorously, it might have been the last time Dutoit is acknowledged on air as conductor.

Analyze This: Canadiens' lack of puck-movers leaves offence in tatters
The Canadiens were 15th in the NHL in goals scored per game in 2016-17, but this season they have dropped to No. 29.
You can point to the lack of production from forwards as a simple explanation why they are scoring so many fewer goals this season, but astute hockey fans know that most goal-scoring plays start in the defensive zone.
Whoever coined the adage “a good defence is the best offence” probably didn’t know that, all these years later, it would apply more than ever in th -
