Brian Mulroney remembers the first time he met Stanley Hartt in the mid-1960s, when both were young labour lawyers with corporate clients on the Montreal waterfront.
“We became acquaintances and then friends,” the former prime minister said from his winter home in Palm Beach Thursday, the day after Hartt’s passing at 80 of cancer in Toronto. “I’ve often said he was the most brilliant young man I ever met.”
Their paths often crossed in Montreal, where Mulroney

Liveblog: Tampa Bay at Canadiens
Any optimists out there?
Thursday night at the Bell Centre, the Canadiens reach the halfway mark of what has become a miserable season.
And to mark the occasion, they play host to the hottest team in the NHL.
Tampa Bay is 24 points ahead of the Canadiens – with a game in hand.
The Lightning have scored 146 goals to 101 for their hosts. The Canadiens have surrendered 126 goals to Tampa Bay’s 93.
But games are played on the ice, not the stat sheet, right?
The teams met on the ice of th -

Stu Cowan: Life is very sunny for Lightning rookie Mikhail Sergachev
After he was traded from the Canadiens to the Tampa Bay Lightning last summer, Mikhail Sergachev spoke with Brian Reid, his billet father with the junior Windsor Spitfires.
“He said: ‘What did I do wrong?'” Reid recalled on Thursday afternoon. “I said: ‘Nothing, dude. It’s just a business.’ ”
Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin traded Sergachev to Tampa in exchange for centre Jonathan Drouin and the 19-year old rookie defenceman returned to Montreal to play -

Two Montreal law firms seek to file class action lawsuit against Apple over battery life
Two Quebec law firms are seeking authorization from Quebec Superior Court to file a class action lawsuit against Apple, claiming that its warranty policies violate Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act.
The application, filed on Dec. 29, comes after Apple admitted that it slows the performance of some iPhone models in certain situations. The company said that’s done to prevent unexpected shutdowns that result from aging, which makes batteries less effective.

Game Day: Lightning's Mikhail Sergachev returns to the Bell Centre
Things could get ugly — or should we say more ugly — for the Canadiens Thursday night at the Bell Centre when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning (7:30 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN Radio 690).
The Canadiens (16-20-4) rank 28th out of 31 teams in the overall NHL standings and have lost their last five games while scoring only four goals. Opinion: Tax evasion should be as stigmatized as drunk driving
When I started work as an accountant in Montreal in the 1970s, back when the schmata business was still going strong, I carried out many audits around Chabanel Street. Every one of those garment factories was open for direct retail sales on Saturday morning.
The fact that these sales were for cash and not reported on the books was known to the partners of the accounting firms as well as to all of the staff who worked on the audit. Many members of the public knew that they could buy “direct -
Opinion: #MeToo is no 'witch-hunt'
Revelations of sexual misconduct continue to hit high-profile men in the United States. #MeToo is now a social movement, an idea whose time has come —and a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the border. This is particularly true, not only in the entertainment industry, but at McGill and other Quebec universities, where students are pushing for new protections against assault and harassment.
A reaction is already brewing. All too often, it uses the word “witch-hun -
