Lesley Chesterman's favourite Montreal restaurant dishes of 2017
When compiling the list of this year’s best dishes, I scratched my head more than once, wondering: Where’s the fancy appetizer? Where’s the game meat? And most of all, aside from the ubiquitous hamburger, where’s the beef? All I kept seeing was chicken, pasta and things made with toast. Restaurateurs may have taken bread baskets off the tables, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t serving us bread in myriad ways.
The most prevalent trend for 2017 was dishes -

Arthur Kaptainis: Before Charles Dutoit, there was the case of Otto Klemperer
There it was, in black and white. An eyewitness account of a maestro groping a soprano, not in an elevator or a dressing room, but openly in an opera rehearsal.
The vignette was one of the highlights (or lowlights) in Lotfi Mansouri: An Operatic Life, a 1982 memoir by a prominent Iranian-born American opera director. And the conductor doing the groping was one of the greats, Otto Klemperer.
An acolyte of Gustav Mahler, Klemperer (1885-1973) was not only an authoritative interpreter of Austro-Ger -
You're not just cold right now. You're probably record-breakingly cold
It’s so blisteringly cold in Montreal that we may break a record set when Mariah Carey’s Hero topped the billboard charts, mom jeans were in vogue and the Dow Jones had just hit a record high of 3793.49.
No, Thursday will not be the coldest Dec. 28 in the city’s history; that 1917 record for minimum temperature of -28.9 degrees Celsius lives on to fight another year.
But it may be the day we beat the 1993 record for lowest maximum temperature recorded in Montreal on Dec. 2 -

Iggy Pop tribute injects raw power into Centaur’s Wildside festival
Annually described as “the hottest two weeks in winter,” Centaur’s Wildside festival is ideal for theatregoers who have scribbled in their New Year’s resolutions a determination to crash out of their comfort zones.

Canadiens lose 3-1 to Carolina, drop farther behind in playoff chase

Whimsies and odysseys: Quebec cinema surpassed expectations in 2017
Quebec filmmakers made waves big and small in 2017. From the upper echelons of Hollywood to the remote corners of indie film, there was lots to applaud over the past 12 months.
The year in Quebec cinema began and ended with Denis Villeneuve. In January, the prodigious filmmaker’s Quebec-shot alien encounter Arrival received eight Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, winning best sound editing for Montrealer Sylvain Bellemare.

Year in Review: A series of setbacks for diversity in Quebec
It was a year that started in tragedy and ended in fake news.
The massacre of six worshippers at Quebec City’s biggest mosque in January raised searching questions about the identity debates that have gripped Quebec ever since the 2007 Bouchard-Taylor Commission on accommodation of religious minorities.
The killings caused an outpouring of grief and calls for nationalist politicians and right-wing media to tone down their rhetoric.
But a period of soul-searching was soon followed by a resu -

“Come this way,” said a private nurse, leading the way to the dining room where Nancy Roch was installed.

Allison Hanes: Montreal's 375th birthday year is over. Was it good for you?
This time a year ago, skeptical Montrealers had a lot of questions about the year of 375th birthday celebrations ahead.
Why are we even marking our 375th? Why are we spending all this money? What’s the point? There was certainly a lot of harrumphing as 2017 dawned.
So after a year-long seduction effort of light shows and operas, streets turned into open-air museums and open-air concerts, giant puppets roaming the streets and illuminated bridges, it’s time to ask the question: were Mo -

Years of pollutants, from cigarettes to air fresheners, have taken their toll on 56-year-old Nicole.
Now, “I live with the minimum,” said the grandmother, unable to work because of lung problems.
Breathing, she said, is a challenge and such daily activities as washing her hair or doing the dishes drain whatever energy she has.
“It requires a lot of effort,” she said. She used to be completely autonomous, but now she often relies on help from the CLSC. “Doing d -

In the Habs' Room: Alex Galchenyuk suddenly at centre of attention
RALEIGH, N.C. — Desperate times call for desperate measures. With that in mind, don’t be shocked to see Alex Galchenyuk playing centre again with the Canadiens.
Galchenyuk scored the only goal for the Canadiens in a 3-1 loss to Carolina Wednesday night and was in the penalty box when Sebastian Aho scored the winning goal for the Hurricanes in the third period. But coach Claude Julien — who hasn’t been shy in the past to criticize Galchenyuk’s play — praised hi
