At Montreal food banks, donated turkeys feed more than physical hunger
The number of families lining up at Montreal’s food banks ramps up significantly every holiday season. And in the tens of thousands of food baskets handed out, chickens and turkeys take a place of honour, coveted as much for their power to bring people together as they are for combating hunger.
Those who run food distribution organizations don’t have statistical data to clearly explain the increase in want, but they have a few theories. The back-to-school season, with its many hidden -
Canadiens resume uphill battle for playoff spot with visit to Carolina
A .500 record on the road is considered good but, after splitting four road games before Christmas, the Canadiens are going to have to be better than that over the final three games of their seven-game Christmas road trip if they hope to stay within hailing distance of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The journey begins Wednesday with a brief visit to Raleigh, N.C., to play the Hurricanes (7 p.m., TSN2, RDS. TSN-690 Radio). Normally, teams fly into a city the night before the game, but -

It’s the third in a series of cookbooks from the group that started in 2009 in Calgary and has spread to more than 20 cities across North America. Besides family soup makers, both chefs and food wr -

5 photos of the year: Gazette photographers pick their best of 2017
The sky’s the limit
It was Nov. 7, a slow news day, and I had been assigned to look for a feature picture for A1. I knew that because the clocks had been set back an hour the weekend before, and it was a sunny day with light clouds, a sunset photo would be possible toward the end of the afternoon, so I headed out to a favourite spot on the lakeshore in Lachine. As the sun dropped to just above the horizon, I shot a bunch of pictures of walkers, runners and cyclists silhouetted against the -

Year in Review: Did Barrette's health-care reforms finally succeed in 2017?
Three years into Gaétan Barrette’s not-so-quiet revolution of Quebec’s health-care system, emergency rooms are as overcrowded as ever across the province and wait times for surgery remain stubbornly long.
The McGill University Health Centre, which was supposed to usher in 21st century medicine with an ultra-modern superhospital in 2015, has lurched from crisis to crisis without a permanent executive director for more than a year.
And doctors are still angry at the ministe -

A deep chill, something about pot, last call & a surprise truffle
Baby, it’s cold outside: With a wind chill of minus-19 Celsius, Tuesday is shaping up to be the warmest day of the week. It was minus-10 C at dawn, and expected to drop another two degrees throughout the day. But the westerly wind will cut right through, so make sure your face is covered if you’re standing around waiting for Boxing Day sales to kick off. From now till Monday, Environment Canada is threatening highs around minus-19 C and lows in the minus-20s, under blue skies. We&rsq -

Year in review: Alouettes hit bottom with upside-down season
Perhaps the wonder of it all was the Alouettes actually won their first game last season. It took Saskatchewan’s Tyler Crapigna missing a game-winning field goal attempt on the final play but, for one night, this team was living the good life.
The Als were still in the thick of the weak East Division race following four games, sitting at 2-2. Three games later, after defeating a Toronto team without quarterback Ricky Ray, Montreal was 3-4 heading into the rematch at BMO Field. An Als victo -
Year end interview: Couillard on Bonjour-Hi, Bill 62 and 2018 election
Looking back over the year that was, Premier Philippe Couillard concedes more than a few things took him by surprise in 2017 when it comes to relations with the minority communities.
There was the, at times, acrimonious debate this fall over Quebec’s new state neutrality law, Bill 62. And who can forget the Bonjour-Hi debacle which made, as Couillard himself predicted, international headlines despite his efforts to contain the damage.
But on the broader issue of the looming 2018 election, -
