A 32-year-old woman is in hospital in critical condition after a fire Sunday afternoon in the basement unit of a LaSalle duplex.
Following a 911 call at about 1:30 p.m., firefighters controlled the fire, which had started in the kitchen of the dwelling, located on Thierry St. near Corner St. They found the woman on the floor on the floor, overcome by smoke, said Montreal police spokesperson Carolyn Chèvrefils.

From the archives: The actress and the bishop
This story was first published on Dec. 23, 2007, in the Montreal Gazette.
“The ‘first act’ of the theatrical event of the season, viz., the arrival of the celebrated French actress in the Canadian metropolis, is now over.”

In the Habs' Room: A frustrating night for players who are supposed to score
EDMONTON — What had been a successful foray into Western Canada ended on a downer Saturday as the Canadiens dropped a 4-1 decision to the Oilers.
This was game in which backup goaltender Antti Niemi stood out as he stopped 31 of 34 shots in his first start since Nov. 22. But few of his teammates matched his performance.
“He was good throughout, but we weren’t good enough in the first half of the game,” said coach Claude Julien, who saw his team fall behind 3-0 -
About last night … sheepish performance by punchless bunch
In the spirit of Christmas, let’s not dwell on what we saw transpire in Edmonton, where the Oilers completed a season sweep of their two games against the Canadiens.

The Canadiens were kinda/sorta/vaguely in this game, largely because of some heroic goaltending by Antti Niemi.
And at least Carey Price was spared what may well have been a rerun of that poop show at the Bell Centre, where he was beate -

Habs Game Report: Backup Antti Niemi does his job in net, but team doesn't back him up
EDMONTON — It was a familiar story for the Canadiens as they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night at Rogers Place. Backup goaltender Antti Niemi did his job as he made a succession of spectacular saves in his first start since Nov. 22. But the defence gave up too many quality scoring chances and the offence failed to produce.

Antti Niemi kept it close in Edmonton, where the home team took an early lead and never looked threatened.
