Montreal company named in U.S. sanctions list
A Montreal-based company has been placed on a United States government sanctions list that bans Americans from doing business with it.
Emaxon Finance International, which was legally headquartered in Montreal, was placed on the list due to its connection with Dan Gertler, an Israeli billionaire and one of “13 serious human rights abusers and corrupt actors” facing sanctions, the U.S. Treasury Department said on Thursday.

Editorial: Hope and generosity in the bleak midwinter
In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan;
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter
Long ago.
That is the first verse of an extraordinarily beautiful Christmas carol called In the Bleak Midwinter, based on a poem by Christina Rossetti.
As sung by soaring voices of the McGarrigle family to a crowd huddled in an icy Outremont square Wednesday night, the carol seemed to have particular resonance.
Not just because of the bit -
Montreal weather gets dicey heading into busy holiday shopping weekend
Environment Canada tweaked its special weather statement Friday afternoon as two storm-wielding low-pressure systems make their way toward Quebec.
The first system, hanging over the central United States and heading toward New England, is expected to bring snow on Friday to the regions encompassing Montreal, Longueuil, Laval and Châteauguay. The federal forecaster called that system “weak,” but noted there’s another right behind it that could dump up to 10 centimetre -
What the Puck: Habs should embrace the pressure of playing in Montreal
I am so sick and tired of people saying that players don’t want to play with the Canadiens because the Montreal media is so mean to them.
Give me a break.
This debate was once again renewed by the infamous media scrum with Carey Price after the Habs’ embarrassing 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators last Saturday in the NHL 100 Classic. Talking to journalists, the Canadiens’ star netminder simply refused to talk about the game or his team’s performance and for much of the time -
Don Macpherson: Falsehoods and their consequences
“Lie, lie, something will always remain,” the 18th-century French writer Voltaire is supposed to have said.
Here in the part of the world that Voltaire dismissed as “a few acres of snow,” we have recently seen a demonstration of that saying.
Two weeks ago, Quebecor’s TVA television network falsely reported that an agreement on construction work outside two Montreal mosques said “in black and white” that female workers were not to be on the site duri -

P.K. Subban brought a touch of Montreal to Nashville for Christmas
You didn’t really think we’d make it through the festive season without P.K. Subban engaging in some combination of dressing up, putting on a show, helping needy families and remembering Montreal, did you?
Thought not.
True to form, the Nashville Predators star dressed up as a septuagenarian named Eddie to commit not-so-random acts of kindness and posted footage of his escapades on social media. In the video, he hands out candy canes and hockey tickets to strangers before tryin -
From Gord Downie to Mary Tyler Moore: honouring those who died in 2017
Art endures, but as we’re reminded seemingly more frequently every year, its practitioners are subject to the same frailties as the rest of us. The past 12 months brought losses across the culture spectrum, with music being hit especially hard. Here is a salute, by no means complete, to some of the creators who left us in 2017.

German museum reverses plan to cancel show on Montreal gallery owner Max Stern
Facing intense criticism, a German mayor is reportedly backtracking on his decision to abruptly cancel an upcoming exhibition on the life and work of art dealer Max Stern, who in the 1930s was forced by the Nazis to sell hundreds of paintings.
The exhibition, Max Stern – From Düsseldorf to Montreal, had been scheduled to open in February in the Stadtmuseum in Düsseldorf, Germany. It was to be the first on a world tour, passing through Haifa, Israel, before culminating at Mon -
Gift suggestions: Hard liquor has more staying power than wine
If you’re looking to drop some extra cash on someone, think hard alcohol. A bottle of wine will last but a night, while a good bottle of booze will hang around much longer. Here are some suggestions that will make your giftee, or yourself, a happy person.
Tequila

Puglia Igt 2015, Primitivo, Atlas, Tommasi Surani, Italy red, $15.95, SAQ # 13366546. Organic. Sweet red fruit that still remains quite crisp. Doesn’t have that dark and raisiny feel of primitivo’s sibling zinfandel at all; rather, it’s remarkably fresh and easy drinking. Maybe the touch of residual sugar adds some extra body, but this works just fine. Grape variety: primitivo. Residual sugar: 5.2 g/L. Serve at: 16 C. Drink now. Food pairing idea: pepper steak.

The Right Chemistry: Diagnosing disease by scent
We spew out chemicals. Hundreds of compounds have been identified in our breath and in our sweat, with the exact composition varying with our personal biochemistry, our diet, state of health, emotional situation and the bacteria we harbour. Can some practical information be teased out of our “odourprint?” Is it possible to diagnose disease by scent, scientists wonder? In some cases, the answer is yes.
Although tuberculosis is no longer the scourge it once was, the disease still kills -
