How Françoise Goyette lost her home, and her sister
According to Quebec’s Civil Code, an owner can repossess an apartment and evict a tenant to live there themselves or move immediate family members in. But the right to repossess a dwelling, whether used in good or bad faith, can have serious repercussions for tenants like the two Goyette sisters, housing advocates have argued for years. “Even if it’s d -

Shelter: 1909 on the outside, modern on the inside of Plateau duplex
As a child and a young adult, Janet Campbell moved around quite a lot. Her father was in the Royal Canadian Navy and he was posted to various places such as Halifax (Campbell’s mom is from Nova Scotia), Brussels, Hong Kong and Singapore. Jacques Cartier and the lost village of Hochelaga
We set out to follow the path Jacques Cartier took in October 1535 when he swept into Hochelaga – the first recorded visit of a European to the Montreal region.
But we don’t start at the mighty St. Lawrence River, walk up the incline from Old Montreal to downtown or hike Mount Royal. Instead, our exploration begins on a tranquil river, takes us through farmers’ fields and ends at a giant hole.
We are not in Montreal.
My tour guide is Donald Wiedman, a talkative amateur historia -

Josh Freed: It's time to ditch the switch and stay on Daylight Saving Time
As I write, night is falling fast, which is utterly depressing because it’s only 3:45 p.m. — the middle of my day.
We are marooned in the Great Darkness: the period from November to February when days are so short you can almost see the moon at noon. By the time you finish a late lunch, it’s twilight.
Welcome to daylight-craving time, when the sun coldly turns its back on us Canadians, here in the chilly attic of North America.
This time of year I’d kill for an extra -

From the archives: Nuisance of winter tested patience of Montrealers
This story was first published on Dec. 15, 2002, in the Montreal Gazette.
Sliding on the Street – This practice, the great nuisance of our winter months, seems to have taken out a license since the last fall of snow. Policemen wink at it and city foot passengers expostulate in vain.
The Gazette, Dec. 10, 1870
Snow and steep hills meant the same thing to 19th-century children as they do to kids in the 21st: a place to rocket down on sleds. And then as now, woe betide any adults so unlucky a -

“I was destroyed,” she said.
The combination of those stresses led to a diagnosis of depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
“I continued to work, to not sleep, wearing myself -
