The Parole Board of Canada was also not impressed with how Ryan Patrick McPhee, 37, a former Montrealer, disappeared from a halfway house for a few months this year. His curfew had been reduced when staff detected the smell of beer twice in one week when h -

Pierrefonds-Roxboro streets are in the process of getting new light fixtures. Work is already underway on Pierrefonds Blvd. In all 4,089 street lights in the borough will be replaced with fixtures that use light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. LED bulbs give off a crisper light and last longer.

Allison Hanes: We all have a duty to respect more vulnerable road users
Quebec is taking some major strides forward in updating its highway safety act for the modern age.
The rules that govern how all users of the road conduct themselves are long overdue for an overhaul that reflects the fact cars, though still dominant, are increasingly called upon to share space with bikes and pedestrians, especially in Montreal.
Of course, many of the changes tabled last week in the National Assembly still focus on motorized vehicles, among them: stiffer fines for distracted driv -

Field nurse moves around, treating the homeless 'where they are'
Part Six in a series of profiles about Westmount day centre the Open Door
Margaux walks in from the rain, stamps the mud from her boots and looks for a quiet place to set up her field clinic.
Normally, Margaux Pontoreau-Bazinet operates out of a knapsack stuffed with medical equipment — lugging the kit under bridges, into alleys and across the homeless camps that line the Canadian Pacific railroads.
But the rain has brought many of her patients out of the cold and under the same roof. -

Dan Delmar: To avoid silly language spats, end the Two Solitudes
The Bonjour-Hi affair — now in its third week — is a small victory for Quebec’s language hawks, hobbyists who’ve been denouncing the expression for years. To deprive them of fodder for these unproductive, nationalistic crusades, Canadians everywhere must agree to abandon rivalry between the Two Solitudes.
It’s the title of a 1945 Hugh MacLennan novel where the French-English duality figures prominently. The idea is often taken too literally by both English and Frenc -

Canadiens Notebook: Shea Weber misses practice again for therapy day
After enjoying two days off Sunday and Monday, the Canadiens hit the ice Tuesday morning for practice in Brossard without No. 1 defenceman Shea Weber, who took a therapy day.
Weber, who was sidelined earlier in the season with a lower-body injury, also missed practice last Friday for a therapy day before logging 21:12 of ice time and posting a minus-3 in Saturday night’s 6-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at the Bell Centre. How Françoise Goyette lost her home, and her sister
Back in mid-1998, Madeleine Goyette was out walking from her home toward the closest bus stop when she noticed a newly erected “for rent” sign.
The apartment, on the second floor of a triplex in Ahuntsic, piqued her interest. It had large windows and a balcony that overlooked the park across the street. A bus stop right outside would mean Goyette, in her early 70s, could come and go safely.
She scheduled a visit with the owners, and liked what she found. The bedroom and ki -

Quebec population rises to 8.4 million as growth rate increases
The population of Quebec increased in 2016, as did its rate of growth.
The Institut de la statistique du Québec reported Tuesday that the population of the province increased last year by 68,5000 to a total of 8.4 million inhabitants.
The annual rate of growth was 8.2 per 1,000, or 0.82 per cent, higher than the six per 1,000 rate registered in 2015. And figures compiled for the first half of 2017 suggest the acceleration of that growth rate is continuing.
