Checking In: Le Grand R offers window onto spectacular scenery of St-Donat
The community around St-Donat is popular with cottagers, but it’s not often in the limelight.
The resort hotel Le Grand R is changing that.
Le Grand R is a deluxe woodsy resort on a splendid private estate about 10 kilometres outside of St-Donat in the Lanaudière tourism region. This domain embraces all of the lodging requisites of a deluxe property, but its wow factor is the great outdoors. Set among the most compelling, pristine landscapes north of Montreal, Le Grand R is at the h -
Judge delays sentence for Canada Revenue Agency auditor
Quebec Court Judge Yves Paradis has delayed his decision on sentencing for a Canada Revenue Agency auditor convicted of soliciting and accepting a bribe from a Plateau Mont-Royal restaurant.
Elias Kawkab, 55, was scheduled to be sentenced Friday afternoon at the Montreal courthouse. He is facing the possibility of a 15-month prison term for having negotiated a $100,000 bribe from the manager and the owners of the Arahova restaurant on St-Viateur St. W. in 2008. Montreal's plastic bag ban goes into effect Jan. 1
The Montreal bylaw banning plastic shopping bags goes into effect as of Jan. 1, 2018.
And while the city’s website says it won’t be enforced until June 5, the ban is backed up by a schedule of fines targeting individuals and companies.
Individuals continuing to provide plastic bags in stores face fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 for a first offence and $300 to $2,000 for a subsequent offence.
Companies found in violation of the bylaw face fines of $400 to $2,000 for a first offence -
What the Puck: Second-rate Canadiens generating first-rate profits
The worst moment this week for Habs fans wasn’t the Canadiens losing to the not-so-mighty Calgary Flames. It wasn’t listening to Max Pacioretty whining in sad-sack fashion about his lacklustre play.
The most depressing piece of news was to be found in the annual Forbes article on the value of National Hockey League teams. The piece noted that the Canadiens’ value increased 12 per cent during the past year and that the team is worth US$1.25 billion, placing it third on the list -
Christmas trees to be pricier this year, Quebec growers say
Higher demand for real Christmas trees and a shortage south of the border means evergreens are likely to fetch higher prices than usual this holiday season.
“Last year, we had a good improvement, and this year, finally the demand is strong for Canadian trees,” said Larry Downey, a Christmas tree farmer and the president of the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association. “There could be a slight shortage in the U.S.”
Locally, consumers can expect a modest increase in the -

Plante makes good on promise to suspend Montreal ban on pit-bull-type dogs
Valérie Plante’s administration is moving ahead with a campaign promise to scrap Montreal’s ban on pit-bull-type dogs.
On Friday, Craig Sauvé, a city councillor and the member of the executive committee responsible for animal control, said the bylaw, which bans the acquisition of pit-bull-type dogs and requires people who already own animals that city considers to be pit-bull types to muzzle their dogs and buy a special license, would be suspended.

Don Macpherson: Questions for PQ members about Lisée's leadership
“What’s wrong with Lisée? And what, if anything, can we do about it?”
Those are the questions Parti Québécois members, including MNAs, will be asking themselves and each other over the holiday break.
That’s following the publication of poll results that are alarming for the PQ and its leader, Jean-François Lisée — and for the future employment prospects of its National Assembly members.
A poll can’t predict the results of an -
Review: Immigrants tell their Urban Tales at Centaur Theatre
Apart from world peace, a nice sweater and two front teeth, what a lot of people want for Christmas is more diversity on Montreal stages. On that score, the 11th edition of Urban Tales delivers by the sackful, thanks to this year’s chosen subject (plus a generous monetary leg-up from the diversity-promoting Cole Foundation).

No evidence of bestiality in animal-cruelty case, Quebec City police say
Quebec City police say that information on social media suggesting a suspect in an animal-cruelty case might have also committed bestiality was unfounded.
In a statement issued Friday, the force said, “Many verifications were carried out by investigators and, according to the results obtained, nothing leads us to believe that the suspect committed bestiality. Information transmitted via social media did not originate from the woman and have proved to be unfounded.”

Quebec's drug-insurance plan 'obsolete', costly, study says
A review by a Quebec think tank of the province’s 20-year-old drug-insurance plan concludes the public/private policy is obsolete and forcing users to pay dramatically higher prices for medication available elsewhere for much less.

From synagogue to Bell Centre: a chorister's Leonard Cohen adventure
I’ve sung in the Shaar Hashomayim Choir for 25 years and, to nobody’s shock, have accumulated precisely zero groupies or autograph requests. It’s a fun gig and great musical training, but it’s never been cool. Until two years ago, when a gust of fate lifted our choir into a recording studio for Leonard Cohen’s final record. What followed was a media twister of performances at major Montreal clubs, a trip to Los Angeles, an outdoor concert in front of 80,000 people, -
An imperfect crime: Killer made series of errors in hiding Montrealer’s body
A Gatineau man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death three years ago of 36-year-old Little Burgundy resident Tricia Boisvert and to carrying out an attempt to hide her body that involved one mistake after another.
“My crazy friend is coming to stay with me,” Tricia Boisvert told another friend.
On Friday, Philippe Steele-Morin, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter and to interfering and committing an indignity to a dead body in January 2014. He was original -

Bill Zacharkiw: 'Burgundy' is the baseline for all good wine
When I was starting out as a wine critic, I was drinking an old Barolo with one of my mentors, David Scholefield, who now owns the British Columbian winery Haywire. “This is great Burgundy,” he said.
“Um … Dave … this is Barolo,” I replied. “It’s not even pinot noir, it’s nebbiolo.”
He smiled and explained that all wine wants to be great Burgundy. It took me a few years to fully comprehend what he was getting at, but he was right.

The Right Chemistry: Taking a kick at the no-touch knockout
“You are just a skeptic,” was the accusation when I ventured the opinion that “no-touch knock out” had nothing to do with any mythical “chi,” but had plenty to do with the power of suggestion.
I had just given a talk on the power of the mind, mostly focusing on placebo and nocebo effects, when I was asked by a member of the audience why I had not mentioned the amazing ability of chi kung masters to focus their chi and knock down a person without touching them. -

Sina Queyras wins risky game of engagement with Sylvia Plath's Ariel
Never underestimate the attachment a reader can feel with a favourite book. It goes, in many cases, beyond the book’s contents to the physical object itself: a cover design can become personally totemic, carrying a lifetime’s memories and associations. Imagine that you have such a book in your life, and a new book comes along that, in an act somewhere between homage and vandalism, essentially overlays itself on your beloved original. You might be a bit upset, right? That is precisely -
