Alouettes courting DeVone Claybrooks to be their next head coach
DeVone Claybrooks is the defensive coordinator of the Calgary Stampeders, who have reached the Grey Cup the last two seasons. And he’s under contract to the team in 2018. In other words, he has a good thing going.
“I have the greatest gig in the Canadian Football League, the greatest bosses. I’m in the best situation and I’m in no hurry to leave. I don’t have my bags packed,” Claybrooks told the Montreal Gazette Wednesday afternoon. “I’m working on -
Solar panels, rooftop gardens on Candiac housing development will pay for themselves: developer
In what’s being called the first project of its kind in Quebec, a new housing development in Candiac is being equipped with rooftop gardens and solar panels that, the developer says, will generate a profit for residents.
The project consists of 148 new townhouses. Half of them will have rooftop solar panels, the other half will get rooftop gardens.
All the produce grown in the rooftop gardens will be organic, said Nicolas Ste-Marie, the president of La Shop Agricole, the company that -

Liveblog: Ottawa at Canadiens
Revenge is a dish best served cold.
It will be a chilly minus-2 in Montreal Wednesday evening when the Ottawa Senators visit the Bell Centre.
It was a balmy plus-11 when the Canadiens played in Kanata on Oct. 30.
But when the final siren sounded, one of the league’s best defencemen was minus-6.
No, not Brandon Davidson. He was plus-1 in the Canadiens’ 8-3 stomping of the home team.
By shocking contrast, perennial Norris Trophy candidate Erik Karlsson was on the ice for a mind-b -

Leonard Cohen fills dance card for Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal
Among the many gifts Leonard Cohen left to the world, naming one of his songs Dance Me to the End of Love is the one that keeps on giving, at least to dance companies.
A few years ago, a haunting Cohen-based show, somewhat cryptically called Dance Me to the End On/Off Love, visited the Centaur Theatre, courtesy of the Danish company Granhoj Dans. Les Grands Ballets close their season next year with their annual Soirée des étoiles, which is subheaded with the song’s title. And -

Analyze This: Losing Shea Weber changes complexion of Canadiens
Losing Shea Weber to a lower body injury was a big blow to the Canadiens’ defence. Not only is Weber the team’s best defenceman but he was logging more than 25 minutes a night while playing on the power-play and penalty-killing units as well as being on the ice during important even-strength situations.
The effects of losing Weber are clear. Despite earning five of a possible eight points in his absence heading into Wednesday’s home game against the Ottawa Senators, the Canadie -

Rash of break-ins has T.M.R. on alert
The Town of Mount Royal has sent a letter to residents this week saying it has taken steps to reduce break-ins after a rash of burglaries during the past few months unsettled residents.
Brazen thieves have been stealing jewelry and other items from the master bedrooms of homes, even while security alarms are sounding.
An increase in the number of break-ins means that 911 operators now treat any report of a theft or alarm in T.M.R. “as an emergency and priority,” the town says in the -

Opinion: Canada needs a national post-market drug surveillance system
If you take prescription medications, what conditions do you take them for? Are they working? Have you experienced any negative side-effects?
Answers to these critical health questions aren’t well documented for most Canadians. Yet the answers would provide the crucial information needed to ensure our medications are safe and worth taking.
Before prescription drugs are approved in Canada, they are tested under controlled conditions on relatively small numbers of patients with selective cha -
The Habs are in the playoffs — if you only count moustaches
If the season ended today, your hometown Montreal Canadiens would be in the playoffs — the moustache playoffs, that is.

The Canadiens had set out to raise $1,909, and have already surpassed that target with $4,711 raised.

Bilingual workplaces more common in Quebec, census shows
As the use of French as the predominant language in the workplace drops slightly, bilingual workplaces are becoming more common in Quebec, according to census data compiled by Statistics Canada.
And part of that trend can be attributed to a drop in the province’s francophone demographic, although anglophones and allophones remain more likely to speak or write predominantly in French in their workplace.
Even though the regular use of French in the workplace has remained stable since 2006, o -
Accurso loses bid for stay of proceedings in Mascouche corruption trial
A Quebec Superior Court judge has rejected construction entrepreneur Antonio Accurso’s request to have a stay of proceedings placed on charges he faces in an upcoming trial alleging he was involved in municipal corruption in Mascouche.

Opinion: New figures on language of work in Quebec point to strengths
Good news or bad news? Statistics Canada released Wednesday its most recent data on language of work in Canada, derived from the 2016 census. The take-home message on the condition of French, always a preoccupation in this province, is, as usual, mixed.
Across Canada, the number of people working mostly in French in 2016 increased by 277,015 over the number in 2006. In Canada outside Quebec, the increase was of 15,825. In Quebec, the increase was of 261,890. That was the good news.

Time frame: mid-late ’90s. Emily Haines was a broke university student, studying electroacoustics at Concordia, sitting alone at long-gone downtown hot spot Jello Martini Lounge, nursing a drink she couldn’t afford, scribbling in her notebook while people partied heartily around her.

Game Day: Canadiens cancel morning skate again before facing Senators
The Canadiens cancelled their morning skate before Monday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and then went out and won 3-1 that night at the Bell Centre.
So it’s not a shock that coach Claude Julien decided to cancel a scheduled morning skate in Brossard again on Wednesday before a game against the Ottawa Senators at the Bell Centre (7:30 p.m., SN, RDS, TVA Sports).
