After weeks of campaigning against each other in the race for Montreal mayor, Denis Coderre and Valérie Plante locked arms Saturday to honour the memory of Canada’s fallen soldiers.
The former rivals laid a wreath at Place du Canada while the Black Watch pipe and drum band played on in the biting November cold. Coderre appeared sullen in one of his last public outings as mayor.
For Plante, who was elected last Sunday, the ceremony was a chance to absorb the weight of her new office.

Pat Hickey: Bettman takes another slapshot at Canadian taxpayers
Never let it be said that concussion-denier Gary Bettman doesn’t care about hockey in Canada.
The commissioner was in Sweden on the weekend to watch a pair of games between the Ottawa Senators and the Colorado Avalanche, and he questioned the viability of the Ottawa franchise unless it gets a new downtown arena.
Bettman has made similar comments about the future of the Calgary Flames, who are also looking for a new facility. In both cases, the teams are expecting taxpayers to contribute to -
Carabins coach laments what could have been after Dunsmore Cup loss to Rouge et Or
QUEBEC — It has long been the lament of losing football coaches to complain about the officiating — occasionally with just cause.
And so it came as no surprise when Danny Maciocia — with justification, we might add — protested a helmet-to-helmet hit on Khalil Kerr late in the first half of Saturday’s Dunsmore Cup final that went unpenalized. That the transgressor, Laval safety Kevin McGee, was a repeat offender, added salt to the wound.
Kerr, who had just -
Jack Todd: Brother, can you spare another quarter (billion) for Big Owe?
The Big Owe is the gift that keeps on taking.
Got a spare dollar? If you do, the Olympic Stadium would be only too happy to swallow it for you.
From its inception in the early 1970s well into the new millennium, it has been a clown stadium, an ugly, ruinously expensive concrete stain on this city, a money-gorging rat-hole down which whole generations of weak-kneed, jelly-spined politicians have happily poured our hard-earned tax dollars.
It is civic folly taken to its illogical extreme, madness -

Stu Cowan: Why were Canadiens fans booing Nathan Beaulieu?
You can add Nathan Beaulieu’s name to the long list of former Canadiens players to get booed by Montreal fans on their return to the city with a different team.
Beaulieu played his first game at the Bell Centre Saturday night since being traded to the Buffalo Sabres during the off-season and played a key role in Max Pacioretty’s overtime goal that gave the Canadiens a 2-1 win — but it wasn’t Beaulieu’s fault. Beaulieu was trying to make a pass when his stick snapped -

ÉquiLibre will be launching its annual awareness campaign, “Weight? No comment!” on Monday.
From November 13 to 17, ÉquiLibre will be raising awareness about why it’s never appropriate to comment on someone’s weight — whether gain or loss — the prevalence of such comments in society and their negative consequences.

Fitness: What we learned from The Biggest Loser
The Biggest Loser was more than a reality TV show. It was a petri dish for the study of obesity, in particular how diet and exercise impact weight loss.
The show was created with a TV audience in mind, but the research community is the biggest winner — benefitting from 17 seasons worth of contestants from which to gather data.
So far, over a dozen studies have used the popular TV show, which debuted in 2005, to analyze the physiological and psycho-social aspects of rapid and/or significant -
