In theory, playing a team in the second half of its back-to-back should be an advantage.
Unless the theoretically advantaged team is the Montreal Canadiens.
This week’s evidence:
• On Tuesday, the Canadiens played host to Las Vegas. The Golden Knights were 4-3 shootout losers in Toronto on Monday night. But notwithstanding 65 minutes of hockey the night before, Vegas played the Canadiens tough. They outshot the home team 29-14 over the final two periods, and only the heroics of Charli

Canadiennes, Red Star square off in Chinese push for 2020 Olympics
Digit Murphy won an NCAA-record 318 games as the women’s coach at Brown University, but she described Kunlun Red Star’s 3-1 victory over Les Canadiennes on Saturday at the Bell Centre as the “greatest win of my career.”
“We had Chinese kids out there playing regular shifts and we had a Chinese goaltender who was making her first start,” Murphy said. “I couldn’t be any prouder.”

Trudeau weighing options on Quebec face-covering ban in wake of court challenge

Quebec's private schools dominate in Fraser Institute rankings
Private schools again took top marks in the controversial Fraser Institute rankings of Quebec high schools.
Just five out of the top 25 schools in the province were public — and all of those are elite schools with enriched programs and competitive entrance exams, according to the rankings, released Saturday.
Only three of the top 25 were outside the Montreal area.

Valérie Plante, Denis Coderre honour veterans on Remembrance Day
After weeks of campaigning against each other in the race for Montreal mayor, Denis Coderre and Valérie Plante locked arms Saturday to honour the memory of Canada’s fallen soldiers.
The former rivals laid a wreath at Place du Canada while the Black Watch pipe and drum band played on in the biting November cold. Coderre appeared sullen in one of his last public outings as mayor.
For Plante, who was elected last Sunday, the ceremony was a chance to absorb the weight of her new office. -

Game Day: Jonathan Drouin, Shea Weber expected back in Canadiens lineup
It looks like the Canadiens will have both Jonathan Drouin and Shea Weber back in the lineup when they face the Buffalo Sabres Saturday night at the Bell Centre (7 p.m., SN, TVA Sports, TSN Radio 690).
Drouin (upper-body injury) and Weber (lower body) both missed Thursday’s 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild at the Bell Centre because of their injuries. Both players took part in Saturday’s morning skate in Brossard with Drouin saying he believes he will be ready to play against the Sabre -

Molson will move to a new, $600-million plant in Longueuil: report
Molson Coors is planning to move to Longueuil, on a piece of land near St-Hubert Airport and the Canadian Space Agency, La Presse reported.
Access to highways was a major factor in the choice of location, according to the newspaper, which said several sources confirmed the move to the new plant, which will cost a total of $600 million.

What is to be done about nudity in a pool’s locker room? Brossard informed swimmers in its November newsletter that nudity is forbidden in changing rooms. “I’m all for respect, but when I’m taking my shower, I don’t want to wear my bathing suit,” pool regular Roland Bérard told the Montreal Gazette. Montreal election: Valérie Plante takes a victory walk to city hall
On her first day as Montreal’s mayor-elect, Valérie Plante took a morning stroll from Square Victoria to city hall and saw first-hand how excited Montrealers are about her victory. Along the route, motorists honked their horns, firefighters stopped to shake her hand, calèche drivers waved and supporters dashed across the street -
Marking Remembrance Day: Two soldiers, one calling
Dave McCrindle, who is 95 and a Second World War veteran, has been wearing his Remembrance Day poppy since the end of October. As far as he knows, he is the only soldier left from the 35th Battery from Sherbrooke.
Five years ago, McCrindle came across an archival photograph of his old battery in an army magazine. He recognized himself — a fresh-faced boy crouched in the front row. He keeps a framed copy of that photograph next to the easy chair in his den.
McCrindle was 18 when he enl -
Couple revels in charm and history of Victoria farmhouse in Terrebonne
You could call it fate, synchronicity or plain sheer luck if you don’t believe in cosmic signs. But one day in 2008, the life of Michel Arseneault and his wife, Claude Gagnon, was changed forever because of roadwork.
Since their usual route to go shopping was closed, the couple had to take a detour. And, along the way, they passed in front of this old house.
It must be said, however, the couple was quite content at the time, living in their bungalow on Île-St-Jean on the Mille-Î -

Sabres at Canadiens: Five things you should know
Here are five things you should know about the Canadiens-Sabres game at the Bell Centre Saturday (7 p.m., Sportsnet, TVA Sports, TSN Radio 690):
Goalies on the limp: Charlie Lindgren will get his fourth consecutive start in goal, but he’d be starting even if the Canadiens weren’t dealing with injuries. He’s 2-1-0 with a 1.35 goals-against average and a .961 save percentage. Al Montoya has suffered an upper-body and Zach Fucale has been recalled from Laval. Carey Price was place -
Josh Freed: Presenting some projects for Valérie Plante
Dear Mairesse Plante:
Congratulations on becoming the first woman elected as Montreal mayor — and the first major mairesse on the continent.
It was fun to see the Gazette and other English media dub you the mairesse, a title borrowed from the French language.
The English term is actually “mayoress,” used in Britain in recent years — but that has a whiff of “hostess,” “seamstress” and the dreaded “stewardess.”
So mairesse has a nice dist -
