Positivity and an idea that inspired people were a large part of what propelled Valérie Plante to power as the first woman elected mayor of Montreal.
She overcame partisanship and last-minute fear tactics by incumbent Denis Coderre’s team to clinch her historic victory, although the mayoral campaign was commendably constructive overall.
The same phenomenon was on display just over two years ago when Justin Trudeau overcame doubts about his lack of experience to sweep into the prime

Project gives underage voters a taste of democracy
They didn’t have a say in deciding the city’s new mayor, but a little more than 3,000 youths did head to polling stations Sunday to answer one simple question: in Montreal, what’s most important to you?
The question led to divided results.
Of the 3,103 votes tallied, 1,001 voters said arenas, sports centres and pools were most important to them. Parks, playgrounds and green spaces came in a close second with 995 votes.
In a distant third place came librar -

Montreal election: Neophytes replace longtime politicians at city hall
Traditional politicians were personae non gratae in Montreal’s election.
It’s unclear whether they were brought down by an unstoppable Valérie Plante/Projet Montréal wave, by their connection to an unpopular Denis Coderre or by a thirst for a new way of doing politics.
But these were among the veteran politicians, all members of Coderre’s executive committee, who went down to defeat Sunday, losing to Projet Montréal candidates who have never held elected of -

Grimaudo's first order of business is to unite new council
Despite an apparent thirst for change in St-Lazare that caused all but one incumbent councillor to lose their seats, on Nov. 5 voters chose for a third time to elect Robert Grimaudo to serve as mayor.
Grimaudo, who was first elected in a 2012 byelection, ran on his record and eked out a narrow victory over outgoing councillor Lise Jolicoeur. Editorial: Montreal votes for change
Montrealers voted for change, and that is what they have got.
Valérie Plante and her Projet Montréal won an impressive victory Sunday, thanks to her fresh, consultative approach to politics and her prioritization of transportation and housing. And, of course, because she is not Denis Coderre.
While the outgoing mayor can justly be proud of his many accomplishments (including tackling long-overdue infrastructure projects, achieving metropolitan status for Montreal and importan -

Even in the early polls it was clear that incumbent mayor Guy Pilon was likely to win a fourth term in Vaudreuil-Dorion, but as election results rolled in on Sunday night, Pilon realized it was more than a win — it was a clean sweep.
Although rival party Team We Are, led by Pierre Séguin, campaigned intensively and ran a full slate of candidates, in the end voters chose overwhelmingly to endorse Pilon’s Action Party. Pilon said it came as a surprise to win all eight councillor -

Charlie Lindgren's success poses a dilemma for Canadiens
When a goaltender shuts out the opposition, it’s rarely seen as a problem.
But minor-leaguer Charlie Lindgren’s performance in Chicago Sunday night could pose a dilemma for the Canadiens’ brass.
