Bill Zacharkiw's Wines of the Week: Nov. 3, 2017
Under $16
Vin de Pays d’Oc 2016, Grenache de Grenache, Jean-Claude Mas, France white, $11.55, SAQ # 12990742. Already one of my favourite inexpensive whites; the 2016 might be even better than the last vintage. Delicate aromatics of orchard fruit and spice, textured mid-palate and a good mineral finish. Substantial but nuanced. Residual sugar: 1.7 g/L. Grape varieties: grenache blanc, grenache gris. Serve at: 8-12 C. Drink now. Food pairing idea: seafood pasta in cream sauce, col -
Bill Zacharkiw: Bardolino is back in the pink with Chiaretto
“At the end of the 19th century, Bardolino was sold in the great hotels in Switzerland alongside the finest Burgundy,” was how Italian wine writer Angelo Peretti described the reputation of the wines of Bardolino.
Surrounding Lake Garda in Italy’s Veneto region, the Bardolino of today is much lesser-known than its neighbour, Valpolicella. Despite growing the same grapes, the appellation’s fortunes started to decline in the 1980s.
“During the 1970s, one litre of Bard -

The Right Chemistry: Evaluating concerns about fast-food packaging
We feel a little guilt every time we bite into that hamburger, sub, pizza or hotdog. They may comfort the taste buds, but the fat, salt, cholesterol and sugar they contain are not welcomed by the rest of the body.
There is yet another issue that arises. It involves the packaging in which these fast foods are delivered. The hamburger is wrapped in some sort of paper, fries come in a cardboard container and that pizza may be delivered in a box. Since all these items are greasy and moist, ordinary -
