Number of Quebec doctors quitting medicare rises to 410
The number of Quebec doctors who have opted out of medicare — billing patients directly for medical services — has jumped by nearly 50 per cent since Health Minister Gaétan Barrette implemented his sweeping reforms two years ago, the latest government figures suggest.
Although the number of physicians who have withdrawn from the public system has risen steadily over the years, the sharpest increases have occurred while Barrette has been in office. During this period, Barrette -
Doug Gilmour has fond memories of two seasons with Canadiens
There is a photo in Doug Gilmour’s new book — Killer: My Life in Hockey — from his childhood in which he’s on the ice wearing a Canadiens sweater. He was about 3 at the time and it’s the first hockey jersey he had.
“My parents aren’t alive now, so I don’t know where I got that jersey,” said Gilmour, who was in Montreal on Monday to promote his book.

Stu Cowan: Doug (Killer) Gilmour reflects on NHL career in new book
It’s kind of funny that Doug Gilmour earned the nickname “Killer” during his 20-year career in the NHL. It’s sort of like a big guy being called “Tiny” or a bald guy being called “Curly.”
Listed generously at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, Gilmour certainly didn’t look like a Killer, but sometimes had to play like one to survive under the old NHL rules — or lack of them.
“I did a lot of stupid things, but it was the only way to survive -

Montreal election: Do Montrealers know the names of the mayoral candidates?
Nearly 60 per cent of Montrealers don’t vote in municipal elections.
One of the reasons could be that they don’t pay any attention to municipal politics.
We asked some Montrealers on the street if they know the names of the candidates who are running.
Most knew the name of incumbent mayor Denis Coderre, but few could name his main opponent, Valérie Plante, the leader of Projet Montréal.
There is still time to get informed about the election process. Read our full electi -

Dan Delmar: Quebec stumbles into religious accommodation debate
Certain aspects of Quebec’s Bill 62 provide opportunities for critics to again denounce Quebec’s political class for its myopic nationalism.
The uproar over the bill is also an example of how the province is often punished for being the incubator of important national conversations.
Faced with unrelenting pressure to legislate an end to the decade-old reasonable accommodation debate from the two major opposition parties and like-minded nationalists with disproportionat -

Opinion: Dominique Anglade is simply qualified, with no need for qualifiers
When Premier Philippe Couillard recently reshuffled his cabinet — a move some qualified as a simple game of musical chairs — he named Dominique Anglade as deputy premier. Anglade, a friend of mine, happens to be black.

Game Day: First goal could be key for Canadiens against Panthers
The first goal could be huge for the Canadiens when they play the Florida Panthers Tuesday night at the Bell Centre (7:30 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN Radio 690).

With that in mind, scoring first would be big for the Canadiens, not only for their confidence but also to keep a frustrated fan base at the Bell Centre from loudly voicing their o -
