Quebec politicians have condemned the use of violence by Spanish police on Sunday that interrupted the vote in a referendum on the independence of Catalonia.

Far-right group, counter-protesters face off at Lacolle border crossing
Police separated pro-and anti-immigration demonstrators at the St-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing Saturday afternoon, after the two groups chanted slogans and hurled insults at each other.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) website indicated the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing was temporarily closed.

Guineans to hold protest in Montreal Sunday against deportations
Several members of the Guinean community in Montreal are expected to hold a rally Sunday afternoon, calling on the federal government to end deportations from Canada back to Guinea.
According to the Montreal Guinean community, requests for asylum since December have been refused en masse. Deportation had slowed to a trickle during the the Ebola epidemic from 2013 to 2016. But now about 10 people from the community are facing deportation.

Fire destroys Montreal triplex overnight; 125 firefighters battle the blaze
The arson squad is investigating after a three-storey building went up in flames early Sunday morning in the Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough.
Police got a call at about 3 a.m. about a fire in a triplex on Côte-des-Neiges Rd. near St-Kevin Ave., with residential apartments above commercial stores. The blaze started in garbage and recycling bins behind the building, and caused considerable damage. About 125 firefighters arrived to fight the blaze. -
