Dissolution of Quebec's ASSÉ student union could begin this weekend
One of the more radical student groups in Quebec’s 2012 Maple Spring protests is at risk of folding.
The Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante, or ASSÉ, formerly led by Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, now a Québec solidaire MNA, represents some 70,000 students, at the college and university levels.
One of its member associations, representing CÉGEP students in Sherbrooke, intends to propose that it be dissolved.

Montreal’s Olympic Stadium is a site with heritage value according to a study commissioned by Quebec’s Régie des installations olympiques (RIO).

Arson suspected in overnight fire in Laval
An overnight fire at a hairdressing salon in Laval is being treated as suspected arson.
Arson investigators were expected Saturday morning at the scene of the blaze at 1263 des Laurentides Blvd., said Lieutenant Michel Lamarre of Laval Police.
The fire started Friday at 11:30 p.m. and heavily damaged the building in the Vimont neighborhood.
No one was inside at the time of the fire. -

This story was first published on Sept. 22, 2012, in the Montreal Gazette.
“Yesterday, the Trafalgar Institute was informally opened for the reception of students,” The Gazette reported on Sept. 29, 1887. Alas, when the doors swung open, just one student was waiting to enter, a girl named Effie Baker.
