A 61-year-old South Shore resident has been sentenced to a 34-month prison term for his role in a Ponzi scheme that bilked more than200 investors out of $19 million.
Benoît Sénécal of Longueuil admitted to using bank accounts in his name to launder money that was collected in the fraudulent investment scheme from people in the Greater Montreal area and in the Eastern Townships.
Sénécal was arrested in 2013 along with six other people after the Sû -
Retiring to Shakespeare's Elbow: Côte-St-Luc bridge club spans the ages
Back in 1960, two young Montrealers met on a baseball diamond in the Adirondacks when their summer camps came together to compete and that chance encounter evolved into a lifelong friendship chiefly centred on what some people say is the smartest card game ever invented — bridge.
Nearly six decades later, the pair runs Canada’s largest bridge club right in the heart of Côte-St-Luc on the fourth floor of the Quartier Cavendish and that bridge club, named Shakespeare’s Elbo -

Police, SAAQ launch crackdown on distracted driving in Quebec
Text or drive. You must choose. That is the theme of the campaign launched Friday by several Quebec police departments and the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.
The campaign will cover the entire territory of Quebec and all forms of distracted driving, but will especially target those who text while driving.
Every year, about 12,000 people are injured in accidents and one of the major causes is distracted driving, said Lt. Jason Allard, a spokesman for t -
Stu Cowan: Habs' Jordie Benn wears grandpa's memories on his sleeve
Any Canadiens player who doesn’t want to be recognized when dining out in Montreal shouldn’t bring Jordie Benn along.
A baseball cap pulled down low and maybe a pair of sunglasses can be enough for some Canadiens players to go out incognito. But it’s impossible to hide Benn’s big, bushy beard.
“A few of the boys want me to shave it off so I quit getting recognized,” Benn said in the Canadiens’ Brossard locker room after a practice this week. “As bi -
Opinion: Tax proposals target the rich? Don't believe it
On July 18, the federal Liberal government announced drastic and far-reaching changes to the tax system affecting private corporations. Although many have voiced their opposition to the measures, a significant portion of the population believe they are justified and necessary.
There appears to be a perception that high-income earners are somehow using corporations to gain an unfair tax advantage and the government is simply closing loopholes that are being exploited by an entitled minority -

Opinion: Five things this Canadiens fan won't put up with this season
I will break a lot of promises to myself this hockey season.
I could tell you “I swear I won’t yell at the television” or “I won’t get into a Habs-related argument at your uncle’s funeral” or “I’m not drinking on weeknights anymore.” But we both know those would be lies.
As we stand at the cusp of another soul-crushing Montreal Canadiens campaign, here are five things I will barely put up with this year.

Opinion: Boeing's attack on C-Series is unjustified
Tension is mounting in the conflict between Bombardier and U.S. aerospace giant Boeing.

Inside the CFL: Alouettes' problems begin at the top, Larry Smith says
Gone but not forgotten, Larry Smith still fields occasional phone calls from Montreal media members perplexed over the plight of the Alouettes, using him as a sounding board.
And whenever he’s in the city, people still stop him to ask if he will eventually return to the organization for which he played from 1972-80, then spent a dozen years as team president over two terms. Officially, Smith claimed the thought has never crossed his mind, and it’s doubtful the Wetenhall family&n -
Stay cool, Montreal: Late September heat wave prompts call for caution
Urgences-santé and Montreal Marathon officials are urging caution ahead of the weekend events in the city, with temperatures reaching an unseasonably high 30 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday, and that’s before the humidex factor.

'It was just a conversation,' not an energy plan with CAQ, Wynne says
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says she was misunderstood by Coalition Avenir Québec leader François Legault during a private conversation Thursday, and in doing so seems to have tacitly accused the opposition leader of committing an online gaffe.

Quebec is renewing for another year its pilot project with Uber, with some modifications, said Transport Minister Laurent Lessard on Friday.
However, the ride-sharing company will have to abide by a few new rules.
