Limits to English CEGEP financing passes hurdle at PQ convention
A plan to gradually reduce funding to the English CEGEP system to discourage francophones and allophones from attending them has passed another hurdle on its way to becoming Parti Québécois policy.
At a morning workshop at the party’s policy convention, delegates endorsed a resolution stating the English CEGEP system should essentially serve the English-speaking community which means its financing should be based on its real population.

Herb Zurkowsky: The Alouettes' season is becoming a comedy of errors
There’s no point suggesting the Alouettes have hit rock bottom — not when this team still has seven games remaining in what is quickly becoming one of the franchise’s worst seasons in Canadian Football League history.
There’s still almost two months remaining in the schedule, plenty of time for this club to sink to further depths. Look, this is a crazy league. Montreal, only three seasons ago, started 1-7 only to finish 9-9 and get to within a game of advancing to the Gre -

Blue paint and lights on Highway 20 a birthday gift from private sector

TIFF: Zombies stalk rural Quebec in Robin Aubert's Les affamés
TORONTO — Quebec’s thriving cinema scene is many things; but a bastion of zombie films, it is not. So Robin Aubert knew he was going out on a limb, so to speak, with his third feature, Les affamés.
The filmmaker and actor was all smiles, Friday morning, following the movie’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where a full theatre and an enthusiastic crowd greeted his story of a living-dead invasion of the Quebec countryside.

August 1, with 19,000 visitors, was the busiest day of the summer.

Josh Freed: Montrealers should have right to pee for free
I walked into a fast-food restaurant recently and used familiar tactics, scanning the room as if looking for a friend. Then, I eyed the menu on the wall, pretending to see what burger I’d order.
Finally, I ambled off to my real destination: the bathroom, which, thankfully, didn’t need a key.
It’s a common strategy used by millions of us during long days out, when nature calls — and you need to take guerrilla action. But major relief might soon be on the way.
