Allison Hanes: Ready or not, the horrors of climate change are upon us
The havoc Hurricane Harvey has wrought on Houston may seem like a distant catastrophe to Montrealers, but it should be a wake-up call that the long-predicted hazards of climate change are now on our doorstep.

Opinion: Bill 101’s track record is one of quiet evolution
Bill 101’s adoption 40 years ago marked a milestone in Quebec language politics. To better understand its significance, we must see it as part of a longer continuum. History, nuance and context will best serve as our lenses.
The Charter of the French Language did not make French the sole official language of Quebec. Premier Robert Bourassa did that in 1974, with Bill 22. He was, in turn, building off Union Nationale premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand’s Bill 63. That 1969 law sought to est -

Hundreds of kilometres from home, a lost and injured baby seal floundered around Verdun and the Old Port for days before it could be rescued on Tuesday.
But the common seal, only a few months old, was too badly injured to be saved and was euthanized, said Emiko Wong, a Biodôme veterinarian who helped examine the seal at the Montreal zoo and aquarium.
“Both sides of his lower jaw were fractured and it wasn’t recent — we could smell infection,” Wong told the Montreal -

Four Quebec City hospital employees have been suspended after coming to the aid of a dog stuck in a hot car this summer.
The incident occurred in early July at Quebec City’s L’Enfant-Jesus Hospital.

Opinion: Confessions of a former high school teacher
After 20 years of teaching high school and CEGEP, I retired at the end of June 2017. Here are a few random observations for the start of the new school year, gleaned from my experiences in the classroom.
Students: Kids are kids. I have taught some whom I will never forget: intelligent, caring, well-mannered people. Too many of them seem to deal with a level of anxiety I don’t recall from my own childhood. Maybe that’s the result of a world that is changing at an inexorably hectic pac -
Urban cool: Megative makes itself at home at Mile Ex End Musique Montréal
It’s not the most obvious spot for a festival. Or for anything, for that matter.
