From the archives: Faster than a speeding horse
This story was first published on Aug. 12, 2001, in the Montreal Gazette.
The injured man was carried into Gauvin’s drugstore, at the corner of the street, apparently dead, but in reality he did not cease to breathe until 20 minutes later in the Notre Dame Hospital. The wife of the unfortunate man never lost hope before the arrival of the ambulance and continued to bathe her husband’s head with water.

Test drive in Montreal: An urban environment is the Mitsubishi Mirage’s natural habitat
Urban life can be a bit of a compromise. Sure, you’re in the heart of the cultural action and perhaps closer to work. But living space is often reduced, and if public transportation isn’t enough for you to get around, finding a vehicle that’s suited for city life can be challenging, too.
While Europe might specialize in econoboxes built and bred for urban life, Japanese companies like Mitsubishi Motors have Montrealers covered with the Mirage, their baby-of-the-bunch (at least -

Nik Lewis brutally honest after Alouettes' victory: 'We played like crap'
The Alouettes like to tease us, like to lead us down the garden path into believing they truly do have a legitimate offence. And, with 11 regular-season games remaining, maybe they’ll ultimately get the last laugh.
Last month at Ottawa, Darian Durant passed for 452 yards, but the Als were held to 19 points after a late third-down play from deep in the Redblacks’ territory was deemed to be short. Two weeks ago, at Winnipeg, Montreal produced a season-high 40 points. But the common den -
Wunderkind Denis Shapovalov blasts into Rogers Cup semifinals
Denis Shapovalov has to come up with some new goals.
The 18-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., had his sights set on a place in the top 100 in the ATP rankings this year, but a successful run at the Rogers Cup has guaranteed him a place in the mid-60s — and he’s not finished.
Shapovalov reached the semifinals of the $4.9-million event Friday night with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 quarter-final win over Adrian Mannarino of France. Shapovalov broke Mannarino to take a 5-4 lead in the deciding set -
Alouettes race out to early lead and manage to hold on vs. Argonauts
This time there would be no epic collapse by the Alouettes.
Montreal had a 12-point lead over the Toronto Argonauts in the fourth quarter, just like they did in their last game at Winnipeg, when the team squandered that advantage in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.
Not this time. But then again, the Argos were missing veteran quarterback Ricky Ray, out with a shoulder injury.
The Als scored 18 first-half points, then held on for a 21-9 victory Friday night before an announced crowd o -

'We will work together': Mayor Coderre tells Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities
Canada Pride Montreal 2017 kicked off its first edition with the hoisting of a rainbow Pride flag to a crowd full of smiles in Parc des Faubourgs Friday night.
Despite being welcomed on to the stage by a small chorus of “boos” ahead of the flag raising, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre elicited a joyous reaction from the crowd of a few hundred after sharing a message of reconciliation with both Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities.
“We’ve had … in our past ind -

StatsCan admits error led it to overestimate number of anglos in Quebec
Statistics Canada has recognized it made a mistake in its recent calculations on the number of English-speaking Quebecers and will correct the data.
But the fallout from the incident continues with representatives of the English-speaking community saying such “alternative facts” have likely already done lasting damage to their efforts to shore up a fragile minority — especially in the regions.
Quebec Community Groups Network director general Sylvia Martin-Laforge said the erron
