MONTREAL — Ashleigh Gentle of Australia posted her first World Triathlon Series victory, but Joanna Brown of Ottawa may have celebrated just as much for finishing fourth.
A week after coming in seventh in Edmonton, Brown finished just behind three of the top women in her sport to post her career best result in the top level of international women’s triathlon.
“I exceeded all my expectations,” said Brown, who had family members among the large crowd that lined the cycling

Witnesses and man who survived stabbing won't talk
A 27-year-old man who survived a stabbing overnight in Montreal North isn’t telling police who did it.
Witnesses who found the man bleeding from serious stomach wounds outside a bar on Fleury St. near St-Michel Blvd, called police for help Saturday around 3:45 a.m.
The victim was still conscious when an ambulance took him to hospital and his life was not in danger, Manuel Couture, a spokesperson for Montreal Police, said Saturday.

Man charged in connection with Terrebonne seniors' residence fire
A man was charged on Friday of causing a fatal fire on July 8 in a seniors’ residence in Terrebonne.
Alain Landais, 44, was arrested in Terrebonne on Thursday, according to the Sûreté du Québec.
He appeared at the St-Jérôme courthouse Friday, where he was charged with unpremeditated murder and arson.
Police are now trying to find out whether the man could be involved “in other cases of arson in the area in recent months.”

EMSB to provide a vacant school for incoming refugees
The English Montreal School Board is offering up an empty school to be used as housing for the influx of refugees coming to the island.
