Opinion: Kimberly Gloade's plight points to broader Quebec health care injustices
“They who have put out the people’s eyes, reproach them of their blindness.”
— attributed to John Milton, 1642
The McGill University Health Centre has made headlines again, after failing to observe basic standards of decency in its response to a very sick person. Coroner Jacques Ramsay’s recent report details how Kimberly Gloade, a Mi’kmaq woman, was asked to pay a fee (over $1000!) for an emergency room visit in February 2016 because she did not have her Medi -

What the Puck: A plea for a reasonable debate amongst Habs fans
I love the passion of the Habs debate, but this is crazy. I feel like there’s a level of bitterness to the discussion of the Canadiens this summer that’s unprecedented and, honestly, most of that anger is coming from the fans in the pro-Bergevin camp.
They simply cannot accept any criticism of Habs general manager Marc Bergevin or his team. It is downright bizarre.

The birth of our cool: Montreal’s creativity is fuelled by nightlife
Montreal’s famed nightlife scene has more than partying on its mind these days.
Creative collectives are forming and thriving throughout the city, made up of musicians, visual artists, clothing designers, entrepreneurs, venue operators and more. It’s in this nocturnal arena where famous DJs cut their teeth, influential brands find their earliest adopters and cultural barriers are broken down. It’s where Montreal’s coolness is birthed.

Refugees in Quebec: Unmarked ditch is now a reception centre
The scene greeting asylum seekers at a popular illegal border crossing point in Quebec on Thursday was vastly changed from that of a few months earlier.

Folding chairs and bottles of water were available for border crossers in a large white tent as they waited to board -

One of the automakers that will be most affected by Quebec’s new zero emissions vehicle mandate has expressed disappointment with the way the provincial government has proceeded in the matter.

Parsifal is coming to the Lanaudière Festival. Got some time?
The Lanaudière Festival concludes its 2017 season with a Bühnenweihfestspiel. You might want to dress accordingly.
Or simply arrive in a devotional frame of mind. Wagner’s Parsifal — subtitled by the composer as a “festival play for the consecration of the stage” — is a solemn undertaking.
And substantial. Given in concert and uncut, the opera will run more than five hours with two intermissions (after the first of which, in Bayreuth at least, applause i -

A lifetime of classic films at Outremont Theatre
Roland Smith recalls the exact date he got his start in the movie business: July 14, 1963. That’s the day he walked into the Empire Theatre on Ogilvy Ave., in Park Extension, to complain that a segment was missing from a print of Michelangelo Antonioni’s I Vinti, shown as part of a double bill with La Notte. Fifteen minutes later, he had a new job.

Dick Pound: NHL's decision to bar players from Olympics is short-sighted and unfair
Canada has, perhaps, a unique perspective on ice hockey. If we did not invent the game, we certainly contributed to its development into a global sport. We have, to mix sporting metaphors, punched well above our weight for decades. We fielded two of the original six teams in the National Hockey League and have continued to be important in the North American context of the NHL. Our men’s team has won the last two Olympic tournaments and our women have won the last four. We have hosted two e -
