Inside the CFL: For Bombers' Jackson Jeffcoat, sacks are in his blood
WINNIPEG — On the second play of the game, the Winnipeg defensive lineman dropped off slightly from the line of scrimmage into pass coverage, intercepted a Darian Durant pass for Nik Lewis and returned it 17 yards to the Montreal 27. Three plays later, the Blue Bombers scored a touchdown.
It was an unusual move for a rush end, a brilliant call by defensive coordinator Richie Hall. And it was a talented play by an athletically gifted rookie with freakish ability. It was, in short, a Jeffcoa -
Teenaged girl found beaten to death in Inukjuak in northern Quebec
The Sûreté du Québec is investigating the death of a teenager in Inukjuak, in northern Quebec, about 1,500 kilometres from Montreal.
The SQ says the body of a 14-year-old girl was found around 5 p.m. on Saturday by a citizen, who called local police.
The badly beaten body was discovered behind a home in the Inuit community. Because the Kativik regional police force doesn’t have the expertise to investigate homicides, the probe was transferred to the SQ.

What the Puck: Andrei Markov's exit paints Canadiens in poor light
It looks bad. It’s true that nobody other than Marc Bergevin and Andrei Markov knows what went on in those negotiations, but what all of us do know is one of the most iconic Habs of the past 20 years is no longer a Montreal Canadien.
It’s bad news for the team, bad news for fans and just a total bummer all around. And the optics are terrible for Bergevin and his colleagues.
It seems to have become a rite of summer for the team — they dump a fan favourite who also happens to be -
Editorial: A far-sighted decision on Anticosti
Cleaning up other people’s messes tends to be a thankless task. All the more reason, then, that it’s worth expressing gratitude for the Couillard government’s decision, announced Friday, to close Anticosti Island to oil and gas exploration.
The mess it is cleaning up was left by the Parti Québécois. Not long before the April 2014 election in which it went down to defeat, the Marois government signed a deal with several energy companies to allow them to explore for -

Five highlights from former Expo Tim Raines's Hall of Fame career
Former Expo Tim Raines will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday in Cooperstown, N.Y. Here’s a look at five key moments from his major-league career:
Sept. 11, 1979: The Expos call Raines up from Double-A for his first major-league game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Raines, 19, had never been in a big-league park before. Manager Dick Williams used Raines exclusively as a pinch-hitter that season and in six games he stole two bases and scored three runs without get -
Don Macpherson: Who's afraid of hearings on discrimination in Quebec?
Been hearing lately about “systemic discrimination?” Wondering what that is?
Here’s one example:
In April, the Conference Board of Canada think tank published a report suggesting that Quebec was second only to New Brunswick among the provinces in quality of life. In a few areas, however, this province ranked at or near the bottom. One of them was the racial wage gap.
That’s what the report defined as “the percentage difference in full-year, full-time median wag -
Interview: Arcade Fire's mainstream experiments born out of curiosity
Richard Reed Parry almost gave it all up to become a goatherd.
Well, not quite, but following Arcade Fire’s recently completed European tour, the multi-instrumentalist was past the point of exhaustion; he had brought his bike along, and someone made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
“I knew I was going to do something fun and have an adventure at the end of the tour,” he said Wednesday afternoon, having safely returned home to Montreal a few days before.

Just for Laughs gala host Joel McHale is ready to skewer
It was a relatively more stable period the last time Joel McHale hosted a Just for Laughs gala five years ago, yet the American pundit/comic had more than his share of icons to lampoon.
Back then, when not starring in the hit NBC sitcom Community, McHale was skewering the likes of the Kardashians, the Biebs and Charlie Sheen for a living on his E! talk show, The Soup.
McHale had a field day at the 2012 fest. Our review panel concurred then that we could have listened to him for 90 minutes on his -

Lloyd Barker: Impact's fitness issues hobble pursuit of playoff berth
I believe we can say that the Montreal Impact will not win the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular season record in Major League Soccer in 2017. Although it might not have been a team objective, it is typically a benchmark achievement that clubs with big ambitions seek each year.
Not only will the Impact miss out on hoisting that trophy, they will probably be in a dogfight just to make the playoffs this season.
Inconsistent play has hampered the Impact and kept them near the bottom of -

Bill Zacharkiw's Wines of the Week: July 28, 2017
Under $18: Everyday drinking
Montepulciano D’Abruzzo 2015, Riparosso, Illuminati, Italy red, $13.40, SAQ # 10669787. Very well done, and with lots going on for the price. Has a solid tannic finish, so be aware. If you are chomping on some meat, it will help reveal loads of red fruit, spice and some dried herbs and licorice on the finish. While powerful, the wine stays remarkably fresh. Grape variety: montepulciano. Residual sugar: n/a. Serve at: 16 C. Drink now-2019. Food pairing -
Bill Zacharkiw: When it comes to wine, irreverence is in good taste
Funny the things people remember about you.A few summers ago, I was speaking and serving wine at a private dinner, and had to decant a wine in a hurry. I grabbed a large plastic water pitcher and emptied the wine into it. I can’t remember if I poured the wine directly from the pitcher, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I did. I ran into the host of that dinner at a recent tasting, and he said his guests were still going on about that.I assure you that at home I’m not like that. I -

As the internet evolves, so does the danger to your children
The internet has changed things since the abduction of Cédrika Provencher on July 31, 2007. But if social networks — which are constantly evolving — provide new tools for tracking down missing children, it also opens the door to terrible opportunities for those criminals who use the web to lure children.
These days, the danger doesn’t lurk just in parks and city streets, but also behind computer screens.
Cédrika was 9 years old when she disappeared 10 years ago fr -
Osheaga on the move: festival adapts to challenges of new location
One day late last fall, before the first snow, Nick Farkas and members of Evenko’s technical team headed out to Île Notre-Dame, set up a bunch of very large speakers in strategic locations and blasted music.
To their surprise, no one cared.
“We didn’t get a single complaint,” Farkas said, sitting in his plant-filled, festival poster-covered office inside the Bell Centre.
Though they likely had fun doing it, the team’s mindset was strictly business. They were t -
The Right Chemistry: A cure for Alzheimer's? Don't believe it
Shampoos clean hair. That’s what they do. They do not cause Alzheimer’s disease.
Why even discuss this curious connection? Because I happened to come across a “breaking news” item online that began with the question: “Could the type of shampoo you use actually cause Alzheimer’s disease?” It went on to say “It sounds insane, and yet, if you’re using one of the 4 leading shampoo brands, that’s exactly what’s happening. Here’s -

Just for Laughs: Back as the gala host, Joel McHale is ready to skewer
It was a relatively more stable period the last time Joel McHale hosted a Just for Laughs gala five years ago, yet the American pundit/comic had more than his share of icons to lampoon.
Back then, when not starring in the hit NBC sitcom Community, McHale was skewering the likes of the Kardashians, the Biebs and Charlie Sheen for a living on his E! talk show, The Soup.
McHale had a field day at the 2012 fest. Our review panel concurred then that we could have listened to him for 90 minutes on his -
