The man charged with assaulting Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard last year during a vigil commemorating the victims of a mass shooting in the United States will be tried in October.
Esteban Torres Wicttorff, 21, made a brief appearance before Quebec Court Judge Sylvie Kovacevich at the Montreal courthouse Thursday afternoon. His lawyer, Arij Riahi, told Kovacevich that the trial could be held in one day, on Oct. 6.

Invasive Asian carp seized in Montreal
Three Asian carps were seized in Montreal on Wednesday in an operation carried out by Quebec’s department of forests, wildlife and parks. The fish are an invasive species and are illegal to own, buy or sell in Canada.

Mark Steven Vandendool has been given more time to focus on running choir practice.
The classical-guitar-playing bank robber was sentenced to an overall eight-year prison term on Thursday for having carried out a dozen heists in the West Island, Montreal and Longueuil over a six-month period in 2015 and 2016.

Trudeau Airport promises fewer customs delays
