Alouettes' offence remains mired by inconsistent play
As much as it left people shaking their heads in disbelief, the tandem blocking penalty against Alouettes guard Phil Blake last Friday was a legitimate call.
“You can’t pull the ball carrier forward, which he did,” Glen Johnson, the Canadian Football League’s senior vice-president (football) said in an email Monday to the Montreal Gazette. “It was a good call.”
While the officiating crew, technically, made the correct call, it was the infrequency with which it -

Construction commission's pension plan review request rejected
The Tribunal administratif du travail has rejected the Commission de la construction du Québec’s (CCQ) application to review the decision on a case relating to worker pension plans late last month.
In their decision, the Tribunal said the Commission did not appropriately alert its members of the changes made to the pension plan in July 2014.

Opinion: A letter to my daughter on graduation day
Today was a momentous day, one that will find itself tucked into your life reel of memories. What you wore, how the sun shone bright in your eyes as you watched your friends giggle around you, all of you dressed to the nines. The feel of the school gymnasium decorated for your enjoyment.

Of mushroom boutiques and sturgeon fishing: 300 Reasons to Love Montreal – and then some
It’s easy — too easy — to be cynical about life in this orange-coned metropolis we inhabit. Winters are long. Springs are almost non-existent. This summer is starting to look more like monsoon season. And fall is a fun reminder that six months of winter will soon beckon.
And then there are the ubiquitous oranges cones that play no seasonal favourites, that can spike the blood pressure of even our toddlers. Fact is, you just can’t get there from here, or anywhere, any time -

The exploratory committee, comprised of organization heads and borough staff, will analyze the issue and -

A Ville-Marie bar is holding a demonstration Monday evening to fight an urban planning bylaw that requires the bar to lower its terrace by about 10 inches.

Soap from Aleppo resurfaces — a sign of hope
Adèle Tarzi-Bachi began importing soap from her native city of Aleppo in 2009.
Said to be the oldest soap in the world, favoured by the likes of Queen Cleopatra and Queen Zenobia, though these things are hard to verify, it was still being made until recently according to ancient traditions — by hand and by foot, with planks of wood strapped onto the feet to flatten the soap before it was cut into bars.
Then came the war, however, and the famous soap industry became collateral -

Jazz fest: Trevor Payne's jubilant farewell concert
If, as Trevor Payne announced at the outset of the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir’s appearance Sunday night at the Maison Symphonique de Montréal, it was his final appearance with the choir at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, there’s nothing like going out in a blaze of glory.

While you were sleeping: Arcade Fire's new album, more woes for United
Montreal’s Arcade Fire drops its album later this month, but you can get a preview of some of the songs today, thanks to the Montreal Gazette’s T’Cha Dunlevy, whose glowing review of the album was published in the wee hours of Monday.
The band worked with fellow Quebecer Daniel Lanois, who produced U2, David Bowie and Bob Dylan during his storied career. While Lanois isn’t a producer of Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, his influence is certainly felt on at least two tr -

Jazz fest picks for July 3, 2017: King Crimson hits the stage with four drummers
TOP PICK
King Crimson (7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of Place des Arts, $93.75 to $210.25). What you get for a top-ticket price north of $200: eight men, including four drummers, with a rabid cult following and a sometimes-dissonant repertoire of brain-teasing compositions that spans almost five decades. Robert Fripp, the only remaining member from the influential band’s formation in 1968, promises more noise than ever. But you won’t take the evidence home: you will be warned to -
From the archives: Travelling French botanist catalogued local plants
This story was first published on June 30, 2012, in the Montreal Gazette.
Par.: Above all things, don’t forget my strawberries.
Math. [going]: Thank God, I think more upon them than upon all your worlds.
The Gazette, Thursday, June 28, 1792
So ended a long dialogue, often facetious, sometimes profound, that had been running in instalments in The Gazette since early April of 1792. It was between a fictional philosopher named Paradoxile and his gardener, Mathurin, and time and again it was t -
50 Years of Aislin: Les anglophones, Part 1
Once upon a time in Quebec, it was English-speaking Montreal that produced the (mostly unilingual) captains of industry; the Catholic Church ran everything else. The Quiet Revolution of the 1960s and its noisier persona of later years finally succeeded in overturning the status quo.
In 1974, Liberal Premier Robert Bourassa, considered a friend of the English-speaking community, introduced Bill 22 to make French the sole official language of Quebec. The province’s anglophones were thrown in -

Album review: Arcade Fire goes next-level on Everything Now
If you’re thinking, as I have been, that this could be Arcade Fire’s U2 moment, look no further than one name that pops up deep into the liner notes of the Montreal band’s new album, Everything Now, due July 28: Daniel Lanois.
The Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer is forever tied to Bono & Co. for his production work alongside Brian Eno on the Irish band’s seminal albums, including The Joshua Tree.
Lanois pops up on two songs on Everything Now, which -
