Kevin Tierney: It's time Montreal paid tribute to Sam Gesser
When I was growing up in the 1960s and exploring a whole new world — culture — Place des Arts seemed like the centre of the universe.
No one I knew had ever been there, at least not until I went to university, and my ignorance only added to its magic. I still remember the first time I saw the building. It was like a believer seeing a church. I wanted to be part of that.
Not on stage, but in the audience; I wanted to see and hear and enjoy. The newspapers advertised various events, ma -

Jazz fest: Ambrose Akinmusire protests eloquently through his horn
Ambrose Akinmusire’s life in music began in the church. No, he is not an R&B vocalist who got his start in a gospel choir, but rather a world-class trumpeter-composer deftly sidestepping his coronation as the new voice of jazz on his instrument of choice.
Choice is the operative word, because to hear Akinmusire tell it, he could have been a pianist or a drummer.
“I got into music through the black Baptist Church,” said the born-and-bred Oakland native, reached at home on a -
Dan Delmar: Go ahead and appropriate poutine. Please
Debate surrounding the cultural appropriation of poutine by the rest of Canada seems absurd but calls attention to a related problem: not so much the “Canadization” of a popular junk food but what could be described as the “poutinization” of Québécois cuisine.
