Jack Todd: Drouin's skills and charisma are comparable to Lafleur's
It’s a mercy the NHL had a roster freeze for the expansion draft. Otherwise, I half expected to wake up and find that GM Marc Bergevin had dealt the Bell Centre to Los Angeles for the Staple Centre and future considerations.
As it is, I woke from a futile attempt at a nap on a June afternoon to discover that brilliant blue-line prospect Mikhail Sergachev had been dealt to Tampa for brilliant forward Jonathan Drouin. And before the ink was dry on all the instant analyses of that deal, probl -
Squeaky Wheels: Highway 40 on West Island to be repaired — eventually
Q: When approaching the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge on westbound Highway 40, the middle and left lanes are horrendous: bumpy, patchwork all over the lanes and big dips in the road. I’ve been travelling this route for nearly nine years and it’s in an awful state. The same goes for the eastbound Highway 40 East between Morgan St. and St-Charles Blvd. It’s a mess of patches, bumps and potholes. Seriously, what more can one say about the state of our roads? They are embarrassing. -
Plekanec among available anchors for Golden Nights' expansion draft
Now that the 30 NHL teams have released their protected lists for the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft, the real work begins.
For Vegas general manager George McPhee, the challenge is to put together a competitive team. The task is easier than before because existing teams have been limited in the number of players they can protect and there are some quality players available.
For the existing teams, the goal is damage control. Each team can only lose one player, but there will be many long- -

Group launches campaign in Montreal to reform Quebec's public schools
The group Mouvement L’école ensemble launched a campaign in Montreal on Sunday calling for an end to public funding of private schools and separate selective specialized classes in public schools.
The group, headed by Stéphane Vigneault, say those two factors contribute to “educational segregation” where top students are separated from the rest, which Vigneault argues leads to Quebec’s elevated high school fail and dropout rates.

Celine Cooper: I have two things to say to my kids' teachers
It’s officially the last week of school, and I have a confession to make.
I am the mom who doesn’t always check my kid’s school agenda every night.
I swear I try. But sometimes I just plain forget, distracted by homework and chores, dinnertime, clean up and bedtime, then getting everyone fed, dressed and out the door the next morning.
This means that throughout the school year I regularly miss things, like those field trip forms or tests requiring a signature, reminders t -

Opinion: Losing weight, increasing fitness in old age
The other day I got an email from a reader who had a bone to pick with me regarding my article on intermittent fasting. He asked me why all my articles were aimed at “those youngsters in the 60+ crowd” and why I don’t focus on people like him, 87 years old and going strong, who want to lose a little weight and stay healthy.
The question is a good one, but hard to answer. Most clinical trials don’t enrol elderly patients. That’s because younger patients take fewer me -

Fitness: More water does not equal better performance for cyclists
Ask cyclists how much and how often to drink during a long ride and you’ll get almost as many answers as there are cyclists. Some believe in reaching for the water bottle often and some drink more sparingly. Then there are those who follow a very strict regimen involving precise quantities of water consumed at regular intervals.
Who’s right?
That’s the question a team of researchers tackled in the review paper The Influence of Drinking Fluid on Endurance Cycling Performance.

From the archives: A mayor with heart
This story was first published on June 6, 1992, in the Montreal Gazette.
Montreal has had more colourful mayors than John Easton Mills. It surely has not had a mayor more humane.
Mills was born in Massachusetts in 1796 but came to Montreal as a young man and made his mark as a fur dealer and banker. He was a member of the American Presbyterian Church here, but contributed generously to the building of St. Patrick’s, the church for Montreal’s Irish Roman Catholics. Popular, perfectly -

Opinion: An ode to my Dad, for Father's Day
Times gone don’t come back.
Gone it has not without leaving a trace,
Like the rivers that pour with grace,
Never again to flow the same way.
There was a rainbow forming. I quickly called my daughter to look at this growing miracle of nature. She came out running. Then out came her dad, then my mother — our whole family was together, looking at this developing marvel. It was a delight to the eyes, a nice ending to a grey Sunday. After five minutes, my family went back to their respect -

Impact settle for 3-3 tie after Orlando's extra time heartbreaker
Jonathan Spector scored on a header in the fourth minute of added time to give Orlando City SC a 3-3 tie against the Impact on Saturday night at Orlando City Stadium.
