Montreal man gets $749 in tickets after dropping off special needs son
A Montreal man is crying foul after he was hit with $749 in traffic fines last month after he double parked while dropping off his special needs son at school.
Luca Amico says he takes extra care when driving his son to school lately because the boy has been experiencing brain seizures. Amico’s son, a teenager, also has cerebral palsy.
So when he dropped him off at school in St-Leonard on May 10, Amico pulled up up to the building, turned on his hazard lights and left the car running while -
Technical problems delay SAQ wine deliveries to Montreal restaurants
More than 900 Montreal-area restaurants and bars are facing lengthy delays in their wine and liquor shipments because of a computer glitch in a new system that was just set up by the Société des alcools du Québec.
Many downtown restaurants were already running low on supplies a week after last weekend’s busy Grand Prix, and they don’t know when they will be getting their next deliveries from the SAQ.

Transgender veteran fights for identity
By Mike Blanchfield
At 5-foot-5 and 140 pounds, the soldier was “petit gars” — little boy — to 41 male Canadian Forces comrades. To their Afghan army allies, the armed woman in full combat gear was an object of unwanted flirtation.
Looking back, Cpl. Vincent Lamarre now realizes his Canadian comrades were closer to the truth of what he felt he was at the time, and has since become — a man.

Montreal bagels and the pollution problem
Dominique Charbonneau cradles her six-week-old baby in the kitchen of her Clark St. apartment, just around the corner from Fairmount Bagel and a few hundred metres from two St-Viateur bagel bakeries.
Bagel lovers might be envious, but living in Bagel Central has some serious downsides.
With the windows open, the smell of wood smoke in this kitchen is strong enough to give a visitor, who does not suffer from asthma or any other respiratory ailment, a brief coughing fit and watery eyes.

These Montreal ice cream spots are cool
Ice cream myths abound. Catherine di Medici introduced Italian gelato to France. Marco Polo brought it to Italy from China. Who wouldn’t want to take credit for this emperor of desserts?

In her first report as the new auditor general of Montreal, whose job it is to ensure the city is making proper use of its public funds, Michèle Galipeau was critical of the city’s management of its emerald ash borer crisis, as well as its handling of traffic light upgrades. But she was scathing in her overview of the management of attempts to upgrade the city’s multi-million-dollar radio-communications -
Habs' prospects, Part IV: Noah Juulsen 'plays the game the right way'
With the Canadiens preparing to select a new crop of prospects at the NHL entry draft, June 23-24 in Chicago, we look at five prospects ready to make an impact in the NHL. No. 2 is defenceman Noah Juulsen.
When Marc Bergevin sent Mikhail Sergachev back to junior hockey last fall, he said he expected the Russian teen to challenge for a job in the 2017-18 season, but he also reminded folks not to forget about Juulsen, the Canadiens’ first-round selection in 2015.

While you were sleeping: Queen Elizabeth's 'somber' birthday address in wake of London fire
Good morning. Here are a few notes from the overnight desk.
Queen’s birthday address: A solemn Queen Elizabeth II and husband Prince Philip marked a minute of silence Saturday for victims of the London high-rise inferno that killed at least 30 people as exhausted firefighters continued their grim search for more bodies. Public anger was mounting as residents and neighbours demanded answers for how the blaze spread so quickly amid reports that contractors installed a cheaper, less flam -

Shelter: Sumptuous style on display in former Mount Royal Hotel
Emile Saleh’s life sounds like one of those glamorous Merchant Ivory movies whose plot lines centre around past events in exotic locations. Saleh, 84, was born in Iraq but when his father got a job in India, the family moved to Mumbai — Saleh still refers to it as Bombay.
As a youngster, he attended a private boarding school in Pune — an area east of Mumbai surrounded by high-altitude towns known as hill stations favoured by colonial rulers during the British Raj. Saleh complet -
Josh Freed: Montrealers desperate for warm weather quick to crowd outside
I wonder who’ll be hanging out in my front yard this weekend?
Will there be another 25,000 cyclists in a sea of Lycra, like there were for the recent Tour de L’Île, which ended outside my door?
Will there be another humongous Ferris Wheel opposite my balcony, like two weeks ago, when hordes of screaming 20-somethings rode amusement rides till 1 a.m.?
Or will it just be the usual crowd of bare-chested drummers over at the Tam-Tams, beating on their bongos all day?

Opinion: Montreal police action plan will bring necessary changes
On Friday, I updated the Commission de la sécurité publique de Montréal on the progress of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal’s action plan to reassure citizens and improve their trust in the SPVM. This plan had been submitted to Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux on March 31.
It is based on three key elements: transforming police culture with the SPVM, improving governance and, last but not least, the performance of the organizational struc -

From the archives: Trouble started with a Sulpician mission at Oka, which led to a land dispute
This story was first published on June 13, 2010, in the Montreal Gazette.
About five minutes past 4, he observed three Indians getting over the fence. … A few minutes afterwards he saw the flame and smoke.
The Gazette, Saturday, June 16, 1877
Twenty years have passed since the Oka Crisis erupted. In 1990, the Mohawks of Kanesatake barricaded a highway to protest against the expansion of a golf course onto land, including a cemetery, that they regarded as theirs. Months would pass, and one
