Montreal had the 11th highest rate of hate crimes in Canada in 2015 and experienced the second-highest year-over-year increase in hate crimes of any major Canadian city, according to a new report by Statistics Canada.

Montreal firefighters to hold fundraising blitz for local flood victims
The city of Montreal’s 2,400 firefighters have organized a day long fundraising campaign aimed at providing support for those residents who saw their homes damaged during last months flooding.
The campaign will see firefighters deployed in major thoroughfares throughout the island of Montreal on June 19 as part of a fundraising blitz. While no particular fundraising goal has been set, organizers are relying upon “the proverbial generosity” of Montrealers to help them out.

Overnight fire leaves 93-year-old man dead
An overnight fire in a family home in Alma in the Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean region has left one man dead.
The body of the victim, a 93-year-old man, was discovered in the wake of the blaze, which broke out at about 3 a.m.
Four other persons living in the home were able to escape the flames. The major crimes unit of the Sûreté du Québec has been assigned to determine the cause of the fire.

Quebecor sells 7 wireless licenses to Shaw for $430 million
Quebecor Media has sold seven wireless spectrum licenses to Shaw Communications for $430 million, the company announced Tuesday.
The move allows Shaw to use a portion of Quebecor’s bandwidth for broadcasting purposes.
These licenses are located in the 2,500 MHz and 700 MHz bands held by Vidéotron outside Quebec.
This transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, including from the Canadian competition bureau, and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
