Quebec construction strike: Unions, employers’ groups back at bargaining table
By Lia Levesque
An alliance of construction trade unions and employers’ groups returned to the bargaining table Friday as Quebec’s construction strike kept work sites quiet for a third day.
The negotiations resumed with a provincially appointed conciliator at the table, one day after Premier Philippe Couillard signalled he would begin the process of adopting back-to-work legislation Monday if there is no agreement.
About 175,000 workers launched the unlimited general strike on Wednes -
For their birthday, Dionne quints want protection for children
ST-BRUNO-DE-MONTARVILLE — Cécile and Annette Dionne have just two items on their wish list as they get set to celebrate their 83rd birthday Sunday.
The surviving Dionne quintuplets would like various levels of government to ensure their soon-to-be-relocated birthplace in North Bay, Ont., has a consistent source of funding once it is moved.
And in a rare interview, the sisters said they’d also like to see Canada do more to prevent child abuse.
The identical sisters were bo -

Editorial: Fixing the MUHC
The uncertain status of the McGill University Health Centre is causing anxiety, both within the venerable hospital network and among the community it serves.
The administration is grappling with cuts to services and programs to meet its budget. It claims the MUHC is being underfunded based on a 10-year-old plan that doesn’t take into account present-day patient volumes.
Health Minister Gaétan Barrette says the MUHC suffers from a”p -
Lloyd Barker: Roller-coaster week for Impact
In a span of four days, the Montreal Impact basked in the emotional high that accompanies a big victory and suffered the disappointment of a narrow defeat.
The Impact dismantled the Portland Timbers 4-1 at Saputo Stadium on Saturday with Ignacio Piatti leading the way with two goals in the convincing win. But the Timbers certainly didn’t help their cause. Hard tackling midfielder Diego Chara was shown a straight red card in the 18th minute for throwing his forearm into the face o -

Alouettes betting QB Darian Durant can help change club's fortunes
As Canadian Football League teams prepare for the start of training camp this weekend, every player is optimistic this is the season he’ll drink from the chalice of Earl Grey, who donated the trophy in 1909, when he was Canada’s governor general.
That would include Alouettes players, who haven’t reached the Canadian Football League’s championship game, or won it, since 2010. Montreal hasn’t reached the postseason since 2014, which is quite an accompli -

Comedy Nest making a move down the 401 – to expand
The Comedy Nest is spreading its wings – all the way to suburban Toronto. It does our civic pride well knowing that a Montreal business can expand and establish a beachfront down the 401 – as opposed to the more usual scenario where a Toronto-based company sets up operations here.
The national Yuk Yuk’s comedy chain, based in Toronto, has set up satellite clubs here over the years, but they have never lasted very long. Comedy Nest proprietors David Acer and Phil Shuchat are now -
What Marc Bergevin can learn from the Predators success story
There are thousands of Montrealers who are pumped that the Nashville Predators are in the Stanley Cup final.
But I’d bet any amount of money that Marc Bergevin is not one of them. In fact, you can safely assume that the snappily-attired Canadiens general manager couldn’t be less pleased to see the Preds four games away from potentially lifting Lord Stanley’s cherished chalice.

Don Macpherson: Saving the Parti Québécois from itself
Not since “the night of the long knives” in the 1981 constitutional negotiations, when an alliance between René Lévesque and other premiers broke down, have Quebec sovereignists felt so betrayed. Only this time, they feel betrayed by other sovereignists.
For the past week, Péquistes and sympathetic commentators have been fulminating against the supposed treachery of Québec solidaire at its policy convention last weekend in rejecting a tentative agreement a -

Guitar teacher robbed banks because he owed money to criminals, trial hears
An accomplished musician who robbed banks in Montreal while he taught guitar lessons carried out his crimes, in part, because he was under a great deal of stress, a Quebec Court judge was told Friday morning.

Rosé-coloured glasses: 18 pink drinks for under $18
Since I started writing this column in 2007, I haven’t really done rosé guides, opting instead to add a Rosé of the Week to the Wines of the Week beginning in 2010. But I have received a number of requests for a list of inexpensive rosés. So far in 2017, I have tasted more than 70 pink wines, most of them under the $18 barrier. Under $18: Everyday drinking
Luberon 2016, La Vieille Ferme, France white, $13, SAQ # 298505. Once again, a study in nuance and texture. This wine could not be further removed from the hyper-acidic, super-aromatic whites that are all the rage these days. This is about pear and peaches, a solid mineral streak and a rich, comforting finish. Serve this on the warmer side, or you simply won’t get what I am talking about. Residual sugar: 1.2 g/L.
