Arthur Kaptainis: Which is the grand finale? A Beethovenian debate
The main event of the Montreal Chamber Music Festival is a traversal in six concerts by the Dover Quartet of Beethoven’s 17 works for string quartet. Or should that be 16 with a kicker?
One might suppose the matter can be easily settled, but the standard count of 17 has been challenged by a tendency to play the fearsome Grosse Fuge Op. 133 as a finale to Op. 130.
This is how Beethoven originally wrote Op. 130 and how the six-movement work was first performed on March 21, 1826. Contemporary -

Gilles Lafrance somehow caused Tremblay to snap and open up emotionally. The jury in Tremblay’s first-degree murder trial watched the end of the interrogati -

Flipping for Chinese crêpes on Westminster Ave.
The owners of a popular new Chinese street food restaurant picked an unlikely commercial stretch for their business: Westminster Ave. in Montreal West. Although rarely lacking in foot traffic, the area is less bustling than, say, the food markets in northern China where the aptly named Montreal Chinese Crêpes and Dumplings drew its inspiration. The last time Jerry Seinfeld performed at Just for Laughs was in 1989. He was pretty much an unknown comic at the time, although buzz was he could soon break out in a TV series, starring and co-created by him, to debut later in the year.
Skeptics in the trade, however, had their doubts, because this was to be a partially improvised show much ado about nothing with another co-creator (Larry David) and actors (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, Michael Richards and Seinfeld) few had ever heard -
