From patios to puppy watch: How a small business found unexpected team-building
Forget corporate retreats, staff behind a Calgary company have built strong bonds after taking in a dog they didn’t know was days away from delivering 10 puppies. “Man-oh-man does a dog do a great job of creating that team atmosphere, especially when you have to give birth to 10 puppies,” exclaimed James Sharp, owner and managing partner of Backyard Canada. The Calgary company supplies hot tubs, grills and landscape design, and is set up to look like a welcoming patio. So when -
Preservation society calls on Alberta government to rethink approval of gravel pit near Big Hill Springs Provincial Park
Alberta’s UCP government has given its approval for a gravel company to start mining up against Big Hill Springs Provincial Park, but members of the local preservation society are pointing to major environmental concerns. Mountain Ash Ltd. received approval from the province on July 20, which would grant the company permission to mine its 130-hectare Summit Project open pit operation located northeast of Cochrane at the corner of Highway 567 and Range Road 40. Downtown intersection to be temporarily closed for Green Line construction
The city says construction in the downtown core is ramping up once again as work progresses on Calgary's Green Line. Now that the Calgary Stampede is over, officials say Calgarians should expect a number of different closures and detours for the remainder of the year. One of the major closures residents should be aware of is a temporary shut down of the intersection of 11 Avenue and Fourth Street S.E., which begins on Aug. 12. Much of this work is helping to move forward the vision for Calgary's -

'Higher-than-normal fire activity' expected as record-breaking wildfire season continues
The federal government says the rest of the wildfire season could be an extra tough one for Canadians. New projections out of Ottawa indicate "a continued potential for higher-than-normal fire activity across most of the country." That's because long-range forecasts show warm temperatures and ongoing drought, according to Michael Norton with Natural Resources Canada. Norton was joined by meteorologists and emergency preparedness representatives Friday. The group on hand says August shows above n -

Survivors of Maui's wildfires return home to blackened ruins as death toll rises to 67
Blackened hulks of burned-out cars, the pavement streaked with melted and then rehardened chrome. Block after block of flattened homes and businesses. Incinerated telephone poles, and elevator shafts rising from ashy lots where apartment buildings once stood. A truck bed full of glass bottles, warped into surreal shapes by the furious heat. Anthony Garcia assessed the devastation as he stood under historic Lahaina's iconic banyan tree, now charred, and swept twisted branches into neat piles next -
Maui residents had little warning before flames overtook their town. At least 55 people died
Maui residents who made desperate escapes from oncoming flames, some on foot, asked why Hawaii's famous emergency warning system didn't alert them as fires raced toward their homes. Hawaii emergency management records show no indication that warning sirens were triggered before a devastating wildfire killed at least 55 people and wiped out a historic town, officials confirmed Thursday. In pictures: Wildfires burning on the Hawaiian island of Maui The information you need to know, sent directly to -
Devastation comes to light as Maui residents slowly return to charred remains of historic town

Trampolines and children's scooters mangled by the extreme heat. Residents of the Lahaina were being allowed back home on Friday for the first time since wildfires that have killed at least 55 people turned large swaths of the centuries-old town into a hellscape of ashen rubble. The death toll in Maui rose to 67 on Friday as officials confirmed another 12 fatalities from a massive blaze that turned large swaths of a centuries-old town into a hellscape of ashen rubble. At least 55 people died on Maui. Residents had little warning before wildfires overtook a town
Hawaii emergency management records show no indication that warning sirens sounded before people ran for their lives from wildfires on Maui that killed at least 55 people and wiped out a historic town. Instead, officials sent alerts to mobile phones, televisions and radio stations -- but widespread power and cellular outages may have limited their reach. Hawaii boasts what the state describes as the largest integrated outdoor all-hazard public safety warning system in the world, with about 400 s -
