'Significant cockroach infestation' results in order for Beltline eatery to close
A restaurant in Calgary's Beltline has been shut down due to a "significant cockroach infestation." Abyssinia Ethiopian and Eritrean Restaurant on 12th Avenue S.W. was ordered to close last week. An Alberta Health Services report shows an inspector found cockroaches in the establishment's kitchen and walls. The notice of closure says an "abundance" of the insect was found in all stages of life. The owner of the restaurant will have to bring in pest control to eliminate the cockroaches and clean -
Alberta NDP election win in Calgary-Glenmore confirmed via judicial recount
A judicial recount has confirmed an election win for the Alberta NDP in Calgary-Glenmore. The United Conservative Party requested a third recount in the riding after a close vote in last month's provincial election. The judicial count found Nagwan Al-Guneid won by 48 votes for the New Democrats. She beat UCP incumbent Whitney Issik. In a statement, Issik congratulated Al-Guneid on the win, saying the "electoral process carried out by Elections Alberta was fair and well done." Results of a judici -
Land-use amendment to develop former YMCA site in Eau Claire approved
A plan to tear down the former Eau Claire YMCA and build a residential high-rise is one step closer to reality. Calgary city council approved a land-use amendment to develop the site of the former recreation centre. In an application to the city, developer Telsec says it plans to build a mixed-use tower on the site. A detailed design has not been established but the company s -

Zakarya Rida Hussein faces four charges including two counts of facilitating a terrorist activity and two counts of participating in or contributing to -- directly or indirectly -- an act -
Calgary better equipped to handle a 2013-level flood event but work remains
If nature serves up another 2013-level flood event, Calgary could expect to prevent 55 per cent of the losses suffered a decade ago. That improves to a 70 per cent reduction once the Springbank reservoir is complete in 2025. "Almost a billion dollars has been committed on projects that are either underway or have been completed,” said Frank Frigo, a water resources engineer with the City of Calgary. That includes the $744-million Springbank project. Calgary suffered about $2.6 billion in d -
'I had no ill intent': Smith apologizes for ethics violation while NDP demands RCMP investigation
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith rose in the legislature Tuesday to offer an apology for her ethics violation. It came more than six months after the phone calls that landed her in trouble. The apology was over a Jan. 6 conversation Smith had with her justice minister regarding a pending COVID-19 case against a controversial Calgary pastor. Last month the province's ethics commissioner, Marguerite Trussler, publicly announced Smith broke the rules during that call. "Although I had no ill intent, t
