No 'n' in Bridgeland: Calgary sign takes another hit
A driver struggling to stay on the road during Calgary's snowfall on Friday seems to have taken down another letter from the already-bashed Bridgeland sign. The Hollywood-style sign that promotes the inner-city neighbourhood sits along Memorial Drive and is made of metal framing and wood, but it was no match for a vehicle that plowed into it last spring, taking down the "d." Now, the sign is also missing it's "n." A photo tweeted by Ali McMillan on Friday appears to show the sign being hit once -

A Vulcan, Alta., woman is looking forward to a comfortable retirement thanks to a huge lottery win from a scratch ticket her husband bought her last month. Madonna La Belle is Alberta's latest lottery winner, scoring a $1 million prize on a Classic Gold instant win ticket, the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) said in a release. 'Advanced medicines still can't treat these': Deadly fungal infections a concern post-COVID-19, influenza
While fungi are not about to start turning the human race into zombies, like in the HBO blockbuster series The Last of Us, the World Health Organization (WHO) says invasive fungal infections are an increasing threat to human health. Aspergillosis is one fungal infection common in our environment but, in some circumstances, it can turn deadly. In an average day, most of us will inhale hundreds to thousands of Aspergillus spores with no adverse effects, but for people with weakened immune systems -

Banff National Park cave creature exists 'no where else': Parks Canada
A cave in Banff National Park has been recognized as a globally-significant location thanks to a tiny creature found inside. The freshwater amphipod crustacean, known as the Castleguard Cave amphipod (Stygobromus canadensis), is largely transparent and looks like a miniscule shrimp, but it's hugely important. "This tiny cave-dwelling organism is only found in Castleguard Cave, and no where else on the planet," said Anne Forshner, Parks Canada species of concern ecologist. It's because of the amp -

CFL all-star offensive lineman Derek Dennis intends to end his career as a Calgary Stampeder after re-signing with the football club for 2023. Dennis, 34, was eligible for free agency Feb. 14. He was a division and CFL all-star in 2022 when he started 14 games at left tackle for Calgary. Dennis suffered a season-ending leg cracked fibula in September during a game against the B.C. Lions. More than 240 idling vehicles stolen in Calgary in the last 3 months
Calgary police are patrolling neighbourhoods as part of an effort to deter car thieves and educate owners who leave their unattended vehicles running. Operation Cold Start kicked off Monday in Calgary and throughout the province as police look to thwart seasonal crimes of opportunity. "Vehicles that are left running with the keys inside can be gone in a matter of seconds," said acting Sgt. Chris Terry of the Calgary Police Service crime prevention team. "These crimes can happen anywhere, even if -
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith opposes assisted-dying expansion as Ottawa eyes delay
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's office says the province objects to Ottawa's plan to extend eligibility for medically assisted death to people whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness. An update to assisted-dying law passed in 2021 included a two-year sunset clause that would see the expansion take effect this March. Justice Minister David Lametti is now seeking further delay because he says there are concerns that health-care systems might not be prepared, and the Liberal government -

"At this time, traffic is not moving," said RCMP in a news release. Motorists are asked to avoid the area as the highway will be impassable for some time. On its website, 511 Alberta lists Highway 2 -

The collision happened south of the Carstairs overpass at around 9:30 a.m. and was cleared by 10:30 a.m. "The area is very slippery so please travel with caution," RCMP said in a news release. WHO: COVID-19 still an emergency but nearing 'inflection' point
The coronavirus remains a global health emergency, the World Health Organization chief said Monday, after a key advisory panel found the pandemic may be nearing an “inflection point” where higher levels of immunity can lower virus-related deaths. Speaking at the opening of WHO's annual executive board meeting, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said “there is no doubt that we're in a far better situation now” than a year ago - when the highly transmissible Om -
Warmer conditions return to Calgary following frigid weekend
From where we ended last week to where we start today, it feels like a completely different forecast. A pal on the hockey team asked me to change the weather (which is somewhat of a common occurrence – I don't mind!) and so I snapped my fingers and said "sure, I’ll get rid of the cold for you." I think it worked? Light flurries are still coming down, visibility's a minor issue, and our high today is a single-digit negative, as a west-wind setup aloft pushes us back toward normalcy. O -
What would it mean if WHO declares the COVID-19 global emergency over?

Foothills Fieldhouse discussion returning to Calgary City Hall
The Foothills Athletic Park redesign could get a little closer to reality on Monday. The park's redevelopment assessment committee is set to meet to update the city on the massive facelift. Councillor Terry Wong says part of that update could involve focusing on one key build. "We are going to basically do a quick update as to where administration is at," he told CTV News. "The fieldhouse is something we can probably move on a lot quicker than the overall redevelopment plan." The fieldhouse buil -
