Pressure on Alberta Children's Hospital continues; health minister says signs suggest infections may fall
Three days after announcing it will pull staff from children's respite care at Rotary Flames House to help at Alberta Children’s Hospital, the province says it is working to build capacity and hopes better supplies of over-the-counter cold medication will keep kids out of care. "We need to make sure that children are getting the medications that they need so that parents can keep and take care of kids at home," Premier Danielle Smith said in the legislature Monday. Smith also said her rece -
AHS redeploys dozens of staff to help with surge in respiratory infections at children's hospital
Facing an intensive care unit operating close to – and sometimes above – capacity, Alberta Children's Hospital has been forced to redeploy 65 staff from a mix of units. Alberta Children's Hospital head Marg Fullerton says the staff came from respite care at Rotary Flames House, as well as some outpatient clinics and even from corporate positions. "We are sustained at a high level of overcapacity at this time," Fullerton said during a question-and-answer session with reporters late Mo -
Alberta's health minister says help is coming for children's hospitals
Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping says help is on the way to deal with strain on the province's two children's hospitals as they deal with a rise in respiratory illnesses. A surge in patients at Alberta's Children's Hospital prompted Alberta Health Services to redeploy staff to the hospital from a facility that provides respite care for chronically and terminally ill children. Health officials have said the Calgary hospital and the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton have been oper -

'The kind of leader I am': Smith accepts sovereignty act amendments from UCP caucus
Alberta's premier says she is OK with her caucus making changes to the sovereignty act she introduced last week, while the NDP argued it would be better to scrap it altogether. On Monday, United Conservative Party MLAs voted to propose amendments to Bill 1, the Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act. The changes would see unilateral powers granted to Danielle Smith and her cabinet removed from the bill and would limit the scope of when it can be used. "She's lost people's trust with this -
