Canadians cut back on groceries, while stores deal with the leftovers
Once a week, Becky Yeh makes dinner for her son. The rest of the time, the Calgary senior is cooking for one. "I cook only for myself so the choice is not much," she said as she loaded groceries into her car outside the Centre Street Safeway. "Lunchtime is a salad and then at night it's only a small portion of fish and bowl of vegetables. I usually make fresh vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower." But like many other Canadians, Yeh is noticing how much more those vegetables cost. In -

On Feb. 11, 2020, police responded to the scene of a Home Hardware store in Blairmore, Alta., at approximately 5 p.m. to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle. Calgarian looking forward to home improvements, travel and general do-goodery following $1M lottery win
"Unbelievable" is how Jonathon Lloyd described the discovery that he was suddenly $1 million richer last month. The Calgarian picked up his Lotto Max ticket from a Petro Canada gas station on Strathcona Drive S.W. on Oct. 13. When the draw happened the following day, his numbers were up for one of the Maxmillions prizes. (His numbers were 5, 8, 17, 36, 39, 40 and 43, if you're curious about that sort of thing.) Lloyd didn't figure it out until a few days later. And it took him a few more days st -
Premier Smith tells minister to 'launch an Alberta Police Service' despite higher costs
Alberta's new premier is moving ahead on a plan to ditch the RCMP and create a provincial police force, despite a report stating it will cost taxpayers more. Danielle Smith made the order in a Wednesday mandate letter to Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis. In it, she instructed Ellis to work with Justice Minister Tyler Shandro to "launch an Alberta Police Service (APS)." In Shandro's letter, she instructed him to "finalize a decision" on the matter. Both letters were made p -

'A hand up': Calgary emergency program helps vets in dire straits
Many veterans who made big sacrifices to serve their country are now fighting a desperate battle after leaving the military – to escape homelessness. Andrew Bento once thought he was left to fight for a better life alone. But the Calgary army vet found help in a special program designed to give vets in dire situations a hand. Bento, who served with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from 2007 to 2010, lived in a car with his partner, Brianna Morrill, for seven months. "We were on -
Calgary's Field of Crosses celebrating 14 years with the help of many volunteers
On a dark, frigid morning the Field of Crosses set up along a two hectare park next to Memorial Drive is lit by spotlights. It's enough light for volunteer Clyde Johnson to sweep the pathway. He wants to make sure it's just right for officials and the public attending the sunrise ceremony for the Women of War. Johnson is an American Vietnam veteran who now lives in Calgary and says cleaning up is a way for him to serve and remember those who have fallen for our freedom. "The veterans that -

Parks Canada says a campaign to re-introduce bison into Banff National Park is paying off as the original population of 16 animals has grown to approximately 80. The data, collected over the first five years of Parks Canada's Plains Bison Reintroduction Pilot, monitored the lives of a small group of animals that were released into an enclosed pasture in 2017. State of emergency unneeded to clear Alberta border blockade: provincial official
A senior civil servant in Alberta says the provincial government never declared a state of emergency after protesters blockaded a key border crossing because it would not have helped.
