UCP blocks proposed Alberta NDP bill to prevent coal mining in Rockies
Alberta's United Conservative government has refused for the second time to move ahead with an Opposition bill that would have placed legally enforceable restrictions on coal mining in the Rocky Mountains. That shuffles the Eastern Slopes Protection Act back to a legislative committee that could rule the bill won't proceed at all. On Monday, the Opposition New Democrats retabled the private member's bill that would have substituted actual legislation for an order from Energy Minister Sonya Savag -
Alberta New Democrats to retable bill to block coal mining in Rocky Mountains
Alberta's Opposition New Democrats say they will retable a private member's bill in the legislature that would place tight restrictions on coal mining in the Rocky Mountains. Leader Rachel Notley says the bill is essentially the same as one that died on the order paper last spring. The legislation would ban coal mining outright on the most sensitive parts of the much-loved summits and foothills. Proposed mines elsewhere wouldn't be allowed unless they conform to local land use plans, were inform -
Calgary sculpture that scorched someone's jacket back on display in June
A piece of public art that was removed and placed into storage after burning a hole through an onlooker's jacket will soon be reinstalled in a new location. The art, called The Wishing Well, was originally erected outside the Genesis Centre in the city's northeast in 2012. A year later, someone admiring the spherical polished stainless steel statue complained her coat had been scorched by the refraction of the sun’s rays. Living Lenses, the San Francisco-based artists who created the struc -

Calgary e-scooters return this spring as gas prices skyrocket

Alberta teens may now receive a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine
Albertans between the ages of 12 and 17 years old are now eligible for a booster shot if it's been at least five months since they received their second dose. Warm, dry days ahead in Calgary
It's something of a tricky article to lengthen when the most contentious point of the article becomes that west wind, but here we are! Gusts at 40 km/h and up to 55 km/h are expected today and tomorrow before they taper to the 40 km/h marker Wednesday, with our seasonal normal temperature beaten out by at least 5 C each day in the cycle. Outcome of Tuesday's byelection a lose-lose for Alberta premier: political scientists
Political pundits say there will be one clear loser in Tuesday's byelection in northern Alberta, but it won't be any of the candidates. No matter the final tally in Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche, they say, Premier Jason Kenney faces an unfavourable outcome since the constituency's three main contenders all oppose his leadership. Lori Williams, a political scientist at Mount Royal University in Calgary, says she expects longtime politician Brian Jean to win the seat for the United Conservative Party -
Afternoon WX update: Warmth continues for Calgary, but the bluster may buiold
UPDATE: Quite a few models are now pushing for a much more interesting Tuesday, both morning and afternoon. There is a chance for light overnight showers, with a small chance Calgary falls beneath the freezing mark and deals with this as freezing rain, instead. All told, it's likely an inconsequential amount of precipitation, regardless of form. Still, it's something I'll keep an eye on for the 5 & 6 o'clock shows.
