Marble sculpture adorns Alberta's first accessible outdoor rink in Calgary
A marble sculpture that took more than two years and 1,600 hours of work to complete is now adorning Alberta's first accessible outdoor rink. The sculpture is called Creating a Champion and features a parent and child wearing skates and hockey equipment in front of a net. And it's big. Sculptor Bill Harvey started with a block of Vancouver Island marble weighing close to 10,000 kilograms and the process of chiseling it into a finished product saw more than half of the stone removed. "It was a ma -

'Massive disconnect': doctors say Kenney misrepresenting Alberta's hospital situation
A number of Alberta physicians say Premier Jason Kenney's comments on Thursday about the provincial hospitalization situation doesn't accurately represent what's happening in ERs. They believe Kenney incorrectly normalized the state of emergency care in his COVID-19 availability. "There is significant stress but it is not out of line with historic trends at this time of the year," Kenney said at the time. "We've been averaging just under 5,300 total non-ICU inpatients since the beginning o -

Protesters arrive on Parliament Hill ahead of main trucker convoy
Consistent honks from truck horns could be heard through the downtown core on Friday as a few hundred participants in the trucker convoy drove into the area and began gathering around Parliament Hill in what’s set to be a “unique, fluid, risky, and significant” protest, according to city officials. Stretches of local roadways were closed, or reduced to a few lanes as truckers and drivers of other vehicles—some sporting Canadian and other flags— began to cause what c -

What does the trucker convoy hope to accomplish?
As the convoy of truckers and their supporters descends on Ottawa for what’s set to be a weekend of protests and potentially prolonged gridlock, what is the group looking to accomplish? Initially fundraisers said that truckers were planning to drive to Parliament Hill to protest against the COVID-19 vaccine mandate introduced Jan. 15 by Canada on cross-border truckers. As the convoy picked up steam, it has expanded to become a much broader vehicle for people to express their outrage at the -
Top Alberta court denies appeal of regulator's refusal to approve coal mine
Alberta's top court has denied a request to appeal a regulatory decision not to approve the Grassy Mountain coal mine in the province's Rocky Mountains. In a decision released today, the Alberta Court of Appeal turned down the request from Benga Mining and two area First Nations. Benga had argued the environmental review panel which blocked the mine's approval didn't consider all the expert evidence available to it. The Stoney Nakoda and Piikani First Nations argued the refusal violate -

Canadian Pacific Railway grain revenues take hit in aftermath of 2021 drought
Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.'s grain-hauling revenues took a hit in the fourth quarter of 2021, even as the company increased corn shipments from south of the border to address a livestock feed shortage in Western Canada. The Calgary-based railway company saw freight revenue from grain tumble to $440 million in the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2021. That represents a 13 per cent decline from the same period in 2020, when grain represented CP's top revenue source at $508 million. CP says its total gra -

Alberta's Kenney to talk supply chain issues, pipelines at U.S. governors meeting
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says he will travel to Washington to discuss issues including COVID-19 and pipelines with American leaders. Kenney says he wants to talk about cross-border supply chain issues, including a ban by both countries on entry by truckers not vaccinated against COVID-19. Kenney says the ban further aggravates supply bottlenecks and leads to higher prices for consumers. He says he will also lobby to increase access to the U.S. for Canadian oil through transborder pipelines. -
Back in black? Alberta set to table budget reflecting 'improving fiscal situation'
As Alberta prepares for the tabling of its next provincial budget, Finance Minister Travis Toews says there are signs of greater optimism. The province has seen years of multibillion-dollar deficits, but Toews told CTV News Edmonton that improvement is on the horizon. "We have an improving fiscal situation here in the province, certainly this year, but we have an improving fiscal trajectory as well," Toews said. Last February, the finance minister predicted a deficit of $18.2 million. By Novembe -
Warmth out to Sunday… then, winter kicks in for Calgary
It's always a solid feeling when there are few shake-ups from the day previous. The largest question mark I can see for this one is from today. That stems from the nine-degree high margin I'm seeing across a number of forecast models. Coupled with the still-very-much-in-the-forecast 50 km/h wind gusts from the west, I won't be surprised if we manage to get above the 10 C call today. Que cera! Tomorrow and Sunday are holding steady, just a hair shy of today's offering. Wind also pares back, somew -

'Embarrassment for the industry': Not all truckers support the 'freedom convoy'
A so-called 'freedom convoy' of truckers and supporters is on its way to Ottawa, protesting the federal government's vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers.
