Westview Heights apartment residents paying out of pocket to survive bitterly cold temperatures
Hundreds of residents at a downtown apartment are now facing the possibility of homelessness as their landlord is no longer footing the bill for them to stay in hotel rooms. Multiple pipe bursts at the 41-storey Westview Heights Apartments building on Eighth Avenue S.W. have left all 297 units without heat, electricity for much of late December. Water flooded the stairs and multiple floors, and with heat not working correctly, it didn't take long for ice to form, coating parts of the buildings' -

Eight postponements were announced in total, including a Tuesday, Jan. 11 game in Calgary against the New York Islanders and a Saturday, Jan. 15 tilt in Calgary against the Vegas Knights. The NHL said the games will be "rescheduled for dates later in the season when such restrictions may be eased or lif -
'Fully immunized is still 2 doses,' Alberta's health minister says, but pushes COVID-19 boosters
If you have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine in Alberta, you're considered to be fully immunized, the provincial government said Friday, but it's vitally important to seek out a booster to protect yourself against Omicron. That was the message from Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping during a media availability conducted on New Year's Eve. However, that may change further "down the road." "We are monitoring Omicron and the impact it may have on the health-care system," he said. "We're being cau -
Hwy. 23 traffic resumes after train derailment in southern Alberta
Traffic has resumed on Highway 23 near the Village of Barons, Alta. after a train derailment shut a stretch of road down for several days. A CP Rail engine and several cars left the tracks Wednesday morning. No injuries were reported but the engine was leaking diesel fuel, prompting a response from a Calgary-based hazmat team and emergency crews from southern Alberta. Traffic was shut in both directions and the highway was reopened on Friday. Barons is about 170 kilometres southeast of Ca -
Betty White, beloved and trailblazing actor, dead at 99
Betty White, whose saucy, up-for-anything charm made her a television mainstay for more than 60 years, whether as a man-crazy TV hostess on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" or the loopy housemate on "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 99. White's death was confirmed by her longtime agent Jeff Witjas in a phone call Friday with publicist Pam Golum. White would have turned 100 on Jan. 17, 2022. She launched her TV career in daytime talk shows when the medium was still in its infancy and endured well -

Family continues search for answers after Calgary toddler’s suspicious death
Gabriel Sinclair-Pasqua was 18-months-old when his life was cut short. The boy spent the majority of his life in the care of Bakoway, along with his great aunt, in Taber. In August, Bakoway says Sinclair-Pasqua went to live with his parents in Calgary. Blizzard-like conditions possible in southern Alberta on Saturday
What a double-whammy. First, the return of extreme cold warnings (those’ll likely move along Friday for a fair half of the province), and now, winter storm warnings!? Catching breaks is not Alberta’s forte. So, to reiterate from yesterday — the extreme cold warnings were replaced because of potential of -40 wind chill values across the swath of the foothills up to Grande Prairie, and all the way back down to Lethbridge. For the former, it absolutely lines up; GP is sitting at - -

Alohagate, Open For Summer, UCP fractures: A recap of 2021 in Alberta politics
COVID-19 dominated the headlines everywhere in 2021, and Alberta was no different. The province was forced to see-saw between various versions of open and closed as cases spiked and then faded twice before rocketing again in December. The NDP rose in polling and fundraising, both Edmonton and Calgary picked new mayors, and the seemingly never-ending battle over healthcare raged on. Unlike in previous years, Alberta's premier declined a request for a year-end interview with CTV News. Nonetheless, -
