Calgary's Bishop Grandin High School now Our Lady of The Rockies
Board members with the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) voted on a new name for southwest Calgary's Bishop Grandin High School during a meeting on Wednesday. The new name for the school, which was approved by a unanimous vote, will be Our Lady of The Rockies. Officials say the new name comes from a school naming committee that was formed this past June after the CCSD voted to change the name of the school. "Extension consultations and community gatherings were held with Indigenous communi -
Calgarians experience sticker shock at the pumps as oil and gas prices hit multi-year highs
A hefty 12 cent increase in gas prices is creating sticker shock for Calgarians as oil prices reach a seven-year high – and analysts warn consumers should prepare to up their spending. Benchmark U.S. natural gas prices hit a 12-year high this week, while oil continues to surge towards US$80 a barrel, reaching its highest point since 2014. In fact, crude oil prices are up nearly 63 per cent in 2021, while natural gas is 2.5 times higher, but this means the cost for a -
Calgary's largest elm tree near the Stampede grounds won't be relocated
It's known as the Stampede Elm and is growing in Parking Lot 14, north of the Scotiabank Saddledome. Estimated to be 125 years old, it's not the oldest elm in Calgary but according to Julie Guimond, the acting manager of Calgary Parks, it is the largest. "We did try and look at the opportunity of relocating this tree," said Guimond. "We actually got to the point where we had a date set for that relocation, we were partnering with an organization out of the United States that relocates trees of t -

'Voter suppression': Indigenous Albertans want options to vote on plebiscite and referendums
Indigenous people won't be able to vote on reserve in the upcoming plebiscites, referendums and senate elections later this month. That's because the province linked those ballots to the municipal elections and First Nations reserves are not officially municipalities. Those communities do hold band elections, but they aren't at the same time as civic elections in Alberta. As a result, many people living on Alberta reserves will be required to vote by special ballot, or drive to the nearest commu -

Closure of U.S. land border may hamper Canadians' winter travel plans once again, experts say
With the United States' land border still closed to non-essential travel, experts say some Canadian snowbirds may be staying home for a second consecutive winter.
