'When are we actually going to get it?' Some Alberta businesses are still waiting for government grant payments
Some Alberta small business owners say they're still waiting for the financial help the provincial government promised them months ago. Alberta rolled out the third round of its Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant (SMERG) funding in the spring. It's meant to help businesses that were forced to close or limit service during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, but some of the payments have still not been received. "I'm curious as to when they're actually going to distribute that money, -

$100K exterior makeover begins on Dinny the Dinosaur at the Calgary Zoo
Two years after the interior was restored, Dinny the Dinosaur is getting an exterior makeover at the Calgary Zoo. "It's a parging on cast concrete and the parging was starting to crack and fail," said Pierre Chartrain, the Calgary Zoo's senior manager of projects. "So the conservators had to remove a small portion and fill the cracks with a compatible material." It takes a month for that material to fully dry before the replica dino can be painted. Workers found several layers of paint on Dinny -

Woodland caribou calf born at Calgary Zoo
The Calgary Zoo is celebrating the addition of four wobbly legs to the woodland caribou enclosure. Zoo officials say Vanilla delivered a calf overnight on June 15 and both mother and baby are doing well. The animal care team has not had an opportunity to confirm the sex of the recent arrival to the Canadian Wilds section of the zoo as it bonds with its mother. Woodland caribou have been designated as threatened in Alberta and the caribou at the zoo serve as ambassadors for the species. -

Inflation sees largest year-over-year jump since 2011: StatCan
Statistics Canada says the consumer price index in May was up 3.6 per cent compared with a year ago, its largest yearly increase since May 2011. The reading for May compared with a year-over-year gain of 3.4 per cent in April, which at the time was the fast annual rate in nearly a decade. Part of the rise in the headline inflation barometer is due to comparing prices to the low levels seen last year at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as for gasoline, furniture and beef products.Newslett -
