'It's a difficult disease to diagnose': Annual event raises awareness about pulmonary diseases
Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a disease that impacts how oxygen enters the blood system and the rare disorder can often be hard to diagnose. The problem is that its symptoms mimic other more common ailments. "I got diagnosed on March 13th, 2020, which was the day of lockdown, so it was kind of like bam, bam," said Kathryn Downey, whose symptoms started about seven years ago. Downey is in her 50s and now breaths with the help of an oxygen tube. She says she wasn't getting much help from doctors -

An Alberta fisher dropped his glasses in a 54 km2 lake. Luckily, he's a diver, too.
Had any other ice fisher dropped their glasses to the bottom of Lac Ste. Anne this past season, it would have been good-bye. But Terry Korz is a certified scuba and solo diver. So when on a cold day in February Korz did something he never does – fold his glasses and hook them on the clothing over his chest – and the progressive lenses slipped through a hole in the ice ("Oh, s--t.") and away into the sandy depths of the body of water west of Edmonton – he faced a very specific q -

Alberta eases security payment burden for oilsands companies
Alberta is changing how it calculates the payments oilsands mines make to ensure there's enough money to clean up the mess they leave behind. The province says the decision is in reaction to low oil prices last year, which briefly reached negative values. Lisa Fairweather of Alberta Environment says keeping the old program would have cost the industry billions of extra dollars, even though the environmental risk of the mines hasn't changed. She says today's move is temporary until a complete rev -
Small businesses hit by restrictions need more support, CFIB says
Now that small businesses are facing yet another restriction on sales, advocacy groups say the Kenney government needs to help them more, especially when many have incurred an average of $186,000 in debt. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says while Alberta's current Relaunch Grant does help businesses that are suffering, the newest restrictions introduced this week has led to a need for more support. "The Alberta government needs to support closed small businesses in the hospitali -

Home renovation savings prove elusive as wood prices at record highs
Canadian consumers have many ways to save money on home renovations despite a pandemic-driven surge in demand that has jolted lumber and construction panel prices to all-time highs. However, such advice usually falls on deaf ears, experts say. Instead, customers are doubling down, switching to more expensive materials as the cost difference with wood shrinks, adding extra elements to their projects and pre-ordering lumber to lock in price and ensure supply. "If their plan was to build a pressure -

A warm, breezy sun-cloud mix ahead of weekend showers
Our upper high pressure is still in the mix for today and tomorrow, with wind growing strong out of the south thanks to the next phase of weather development here in Alberta.
