When crews arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the daycare building. Firefighters went inside and quickly put out the blaze. All occupants of the building had gotten out prior to the CFD's arrival. The ca -
Restaurants on Calgary's Stephen Ave. returning to some normalcy
With warm temperatures, this weekend is the first real test for many restaurants and bars in Calgary as they welcome back customers. "It’s about time," said Nick Smerek, general manager of Social Beer Haus on Stephen Avenue. On Monday, the province allowed restaurants and bars to reopen at half capacity and seat no more than six people per table. Stephen Avenue has been closed to vehicle traffic, to allow for more spacing for pedestrians. "People are just happy to get out of the house, the -
Calgary-made control room helped SpaceX astronauts reach the stars
As millions of people watched the first astronauts launched into orbit from U.S. soil for the first time in a decade, many of those observers may not have realized the Calgary connection to the operation. Evans Consoles, which operates in northeast Calgary, has been working side-by-side with NASA for several decades, supplying them with a number of different pieces of equipment to use in some of the key operations centres. Pangolins may have incubated the novel coronavirus, gene study shows
A deep dive into the genetics of the novel coronavirus shows it seems to have spent some time infecting both bats and pangolins before it jumped into humans, researchers said Friday. But they said it's too soon to blame pangolins for the pandemic and say a third species of animal may have played host to the virus before it spilled over to people. What is clear is that the coronavirus has swapped genes repeatedly with similar strains infecting bats, pangolins and a possible third species, a team -

China says U.S. action on Hong Kong 'doomed to fail'
The mouthpiece newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party said Saturday that the U.S. decision to end some trading privileges for Hong Kong "grossly interferes" in China's internal affairs and is "doomed to fail." The Hong Kong government called U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement unjustified and said it is "not unduly worried by such threats," despite concern that they could drive companies away from the Asian financial and trading centre. An editorial in China's official People's Daily -
Louisville PD apologizes for targeting news crew at protest
Kentucky's governor on Saturday called in the National Guard to "help keep the peace" in Louisville after a second night of protests sparked by the police shooting of a black woman led to widespread damage. His action came after the unrest Friday night spread through parts of downtown Louisville, resulting in windows being sh -
Two astronauts climb aboard SpaceX rocket for historic flight
Despite more storms in the forecast, two NASA astronauts climbed into their capsule Saturday for a second attempt at a history-making ride into orbit aboard a rocket ship designed and built by Elon Musk's SpaceX company. With the flight already delayed three days by bad weather, forecasters put the odds of acceptable conditions at 50-50 for the 3:22 p.m. liftoff of the 270-foot Falcon 9 in what would be the first launch of astronauts into orbit by a private company. Their destination: the Intern -
SpaceX rocket lifts off from U.S. in history-making flight
A rocket ship designed and built by Elon Musk's SpaceX company has lifted off with two Americans on a history-making flight to the International Space Station. The spacecraft took off Saturday afternoon from the same launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida, that was used during the Apollo missions to the moon a half-century ago. The flight ushers in a new era in commercial space travel and marks the first time NASA has launched astronauts from U.S. soil in nearly a decade. "Let's light this candle -
EU urges Trump to rethink cutting funding to WHO
The European Union on Saturday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to rethink his decision to cut American funding for the World Health Organization amid global criticism of the move, as spiking infection rates in India and elsewhere served as a reminder the global pandemic is far from contained. Trump on Friday charged that the WHO didn't respond adequately to the pandemic, accusing the UN agency of being under China's "total control." Happy ending for Alberta and B.C. couples with pandemic wedding dates
A little over a month ago, five Alberta and B.C. couples saw their best-laid wedding plans crumble in the pandemic. Friday, they got some good news.
