Andreescu becomes first Canadian to win Grand Slam with U.S. Open win
NEW YORK -- Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title, beating Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday in the U.S. Open women's final. The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., used her powerful forehand -- and was helped by an uncharacteristically bad service game from the veteran Williams -- for her third tournament win of the season, and biggest by far of her career, in her first U.S. Open main draw appearance. Handmade history: Calgarian builds Second World War replica

For the last several years, retired engineer Barry Halliwell has toiled in the workshop of Calgary’s Hangar Aircraft Museum, meticulously recreating the tail section of an Oxford aircraft. The British forces sent pilots to Canada to train on the Oxford before flying in larger planes like Lancaster bombers on missions in Europe. The O -

U.S. mass shooters exploited gaps, errors in background checks
Most mass shooters in the U.S. acquired the weapons they used legally because there was nothing in their backgrounds to disqualify them, according to James Alan Fox, a criminologist with Northeastern University who has studied mass shootings for decades. But in several attacks in recent years gunmen acquired weapons as a result of mistakes, lack of follow-through or gaps in federal and state law. Not all gun purchases are subject to a federal background check system. Even for those that are, fed -
