Canada won’t 'back down' on Hong Kong stance: Trudeau
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is standing firm on his government’s response to the ongoing Hong Kong protests, despite increased caution from Chinese authorities to step aside. While delivering a foreign policy speech in Montreal on Wednesday, Trudeau said his government is monitoring the situation in Hong Kong “closely” and despite political differences with China, Canada will continue to defend its values of human rights and international law. “As a global community, we -
Jasper National Park stops issuing bear reports so people 'give wildlife space'
Jasper National Park has stopped issuing its regular bear warnings so that people will ‘give wildlife space’ and stop forming crowds to snap photos of the animals. The weekly reports were originally created to warn people about areas to avoid if a bear had been spotted nearby. But now, they seem to be counterproductive. In late July, Parks Canada posted a notice saying that “in an effort to give wildlife space and to reduce bear jams in Jasper National Park, we have discontinue -
Federal natural resources minister to talk Trans Mountain pipeline expansion progress
Federal Minister of Natural Resources Amarjeet Sohi will be in Sherwood Park on Wednesday morning to discuss progress on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project. Ottawa gave the expansion a second lease on life in June, nine months after the federal court of appeal ripped up the original approval. At the time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said shovels could be in the ground as early as this summer. Some introductory work on the project began moving ahead earlier this month after the -

Construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project will further begin ramping up after “Notice to Proceed” directives were issued, company officials said Wednesday. That means contractors will have 30 days to mobilize equipment and start the process of hiring workers, procuring goods and services and developing detailed construction work plans for expansion of the 1,150-km pipeline running from northern Alberta to the B.C. coast. Work is expected to begin “soon&rdquo -
Teacher who slept in same hotel bed as student loses her licence
A high school teacher who had an "inappropriate personal relationship" with a student, including sexual contact, has had her licence revoked by Ontario's governing body for teachers. The Ontario College of Teachers pulled Sheryl Anna Jean Fontaine's licence July 9 following a disciplinary hearing. "As an educator, (Fontaine) took advantage of her position of trust and authority to make sexual advances to a student," the college's discipline committee wrote in its decision, which was recently pub -

Inflation hits Bank of Canada 2% target for second straight month
OTTAWA -- Canadian annual inflation hit the Bank of Canada's ideal target for a second straight month, providing a stretch of price stability that's unlikely to weigh heavily on next month's interest-rate decision. The inflation number came in at two per cent last month, Statistics Canada said Wednesday, which kept it right at the mid-point of the central bank's range of one to three per cent. Compared with a year earlier, consumers paid less in July for gasoline, internet services and traveller -
Province extends oil curtailment program, raises base limit
Alberta will continue to curtail oil production into December of 2020 but producers will be permitted to increase production beginning in October of this year. Energy Minister Sonya Savage announced Tuesday that the base limit for curtailment will increase from 10,000 barrels per day to 20,000 barrels per day this fall. The move will reduce the number of producers impacted by the curtailment from 29 to 16. Savage says the curtailment program's extension is the result of the continued lack -

TORONTO -- Royal Bank of Canada increased its dividend as its third-quarter profit rose five per cent to $3.3 billion, but the lender's latest earnings missed estimates as challenging market conditions weighed on its capital markets division. The Toronto-based lender said Wednesday it will now pay a quarterly dividend of $1.05 per share, up three cents or three per cent. The increased payment to shareholders came as RBC reported $3.3 billion in net income for the quarter ended July 31, up five p -
China ties shape cautious reaction to Hong Kong protests
For Canada and the European Union, they are a "situation." For President Donald Trump, a potential stumbling block in ongoing trade disputes. And for South Korea, an issue to be monitored. With the notable exception of Taiwan, cautious comments from the few governments willing to speak out on the ongoing protests in Hong Kong fall far short of support for the demonstrators. They are so mild that even the word "protest" itself was left out of the joint EU-Canada statement that was the most recent -
Liberals unhurt, Tories not helped by scathing SNC-Lavalin report: poll
OTTAWA -- A new poll suggests a scathing ethics report on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's handling of the SNC-Lavalin affair hasn't so far hurt the Liberals' chances of re-election this fall -- and it hasn't helped the Conservatives. Indeed, the Leger poll suggests the two parties were locked in a dead heat, with the support of 33 per cent of voters, as they jockey for position at the starting gate for the Oct. 21 vote. Liberal support was unchanged from last month, despite last week's damning r -
