OTTAWA -- Malign foreign actors will likely try to meddle in the Canadian federal election in October, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland warned Friday, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pointed the finger at Russia as the most likely culprit. Freeland sounded the alarm over election interference at a G7 foreign ministers' gathering in France. At a parallel G7 meeting of interior ministers, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the bloc wants the world's big internet companies -- Goo -
Gerard Bouchard warns Quebec government against perils of religious symbols ban
MONTREAL -- Quebec's proposed legislation banning religious symbols for some public servants drew more strong criticism Friday, with one of the province's leading intellectuals rebuking the Coalition Avenir Quebec government's approach. Gerard Bouchard, co-author of a 2008 report cited as inspiration for the government's Bill 21, wrote in Friday's La Presse that it would be a serious mistake to prohibit teachers from wearing religious symbols. He questioned whether Premier Francois Legault had " -
Barbs traded during Leaders Debate but no knockout zingers landed, say political observers
Plenty of verbal jabs were traded during the Leaders Debate in Edmonton on Thursday, but none stung enough to sway voters, say political observers. “With debates, you judge them like you do a boxing match, so there was no knockout last night,” said Marc Henry, president of ThinHQ Public Affairs. “And I don’t think, frankly, the debate moved a lot of voters one way or the other. So then you’ve got to go to the scorecards, and the scorecards are based upon, what are t -

Canadian economy's six-month streak of job creation comes to an end
OTTAWA -- The Canadian economy's six-month streak of job creation -- that included a number of big gains -- came to an end in March. Study challenges health benefits of moderate drinking
LONDON -- A new study challenges the idea that moderate drinking could actually be good for you. People who have one or two drinks a day have long been noted to have a lower risk of stroke and heart problems, but scientists were unsure if this was because light drinking protected them. In a large genetic study done in China, scientists found moderate drinking raises risk of stroke and high blood pressure -- but they didn't have enough data to say whether the same is true for heart attacks. HUMBOLDT, Sask. -- After the last funeral, Matteo Carboni didn't go back. Ten months passed before the minister from Humboldt, Sask., realized he hadn't set foot again inside the Elgar Petersen Arena, home of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. Thousands gathered at the arena last April to mourn after the team's bus and a semi-truck collided while the Broncos were on the way to a playoff game. Sixteen people were killed and an -

WASHINGTON -- Attorney General William Barr is defending his handling of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on the Russia investigation, saying the confidential document contains sensitive grand jury material that prevented it from being immediately released to the public.
