MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Defending champion Madison Keys struggled early but held on to defeat Oleksandra Oliynykova and her offbeat style of game 7-6 (6), 6-1 in a first-round match Tuesday at the Australian Open.
Ninth-seeded Keys, playing in her 50th Grand Slam tournament, dug herself into a deep hole at Rod Laver Arena. She trailed 4-0 in the first set and rallied to force a tiebreaker against the Ukrainian.

MELBOURNE — Janice Tjen's rise to becoming the No. 1 women's player in Indonesia has included one WTA singles title and three doubles championships.
The 23-year-old reached No. 53 in the WTA singles rankings in November and her coaches predicted then the best was yet to come.

Former federal justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould says she will be starting treatment for breast cancer.
In a post on social media, Wilson-Raybould says the treatment comes following recent surgery.

Police probe whether extortion victims ‘recklessly’ returned fire in Surrey, B.C.
SURREY — Police in Surrey, B.C., say an extortion-related investigation into a home being shot at over the weekend has spawned a second investigation into whether bullets went flying in the other direction as well.
Police say the residence in the Bear Creek neighbourhood was shot at on Saturday and while the home was occupied at the time, nobody was injured.

Chilliwack RCMP confirm police incident, hold and secure at nearby elementary school Monday
CHILLIWACK — Multiple police units and ERT personnel have attended a home near Landing Drive in Chilliwack Monday afternoon.
According to a witness on scene, multiple police units, including what appears to be an Emergency Response Team (ERT) armoured truck, were seen at a home close to Landing Drive.
That witness reported seeing police with their rifles displayed.
One person was reportedly detained and taken away from the home in handcuffs, the witness said.
