The New York Islanders won the NHL draft lottery on Monday and vaulted over nine teams, including the last-place San Jose Sharks, in winning the opportunity to have the No. 1 pick.
The Islanders, who are in the midst of a front-office change, overcame having just a 3.5 per cent chance of winning the lottery. New York has the right to pick first for the fifth time in team history, and first since selecting John Tavares with the No. 1 pick in 2009.

Police investigating first Vancouver homicide of 2026
VANCOUVER — Police in Vancouver are investigating the city's first homicide of 2026.
A statement from police says a man was stabbed Tuesday near East 10th Avenue and Commercial Drive.
Police say they were called at 8:40 p.m. and the victim was transported to hospital where he later died.
The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Christopher Jumal Sanderson.Investigators say no arrests have been made.
