The New York Islanders won the NHL draft lottery on Monday and vaulted over nine teams, including the last-place San Jose Sharks, in winning the opportunity to have the No. 1 pick.
The Islanders, who are in the midst of a front-office change, overcame having just a 3.5 per cent chance of winning the lottery. New York has the right to pick first for the fifth time in team history, and first since selecting John Tavares with the No. 1 pick in 2009.

VANCOUVER — Major crime investigators are looking into the death of a 16-year-old girl found dead in a Vancouver home after first being reported missing in North Vancouver.

VANCOUVER — A 50-year-old man has been arrested in Vancouver for allegedly trying to spray a stranger with paint and threatening him with a knife after being confronted.

Part of Ottawa’s Rideau Canal skateway set to open on Dec. 31
OTTAWA — A section of Ottawa's historic Rideau Canal skateway is set to open the morning of Dec. 31.

ECHL players ratify new labor deal, ending strike that had postponed games

Person found injured after shootout involving police in Quebec Far North has died
MONTREAL — Quebec's police watchdog says one of two people who were found injured after an exchange of gunfire involving the Nunavik Police Service on Dec. 20 has died.
The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes says the person who died had been found inside the residence following the shooting.
